porlanders,
i am making a run up to the NW next month, and i want to stay a nite/day in portland.
Just wondering if you have reco's on what to do, where to go, etc.

If you're there over the weekend the Saturday market (on Sunday too) has some interesting crap to buy. I suggest the soap from Oregon Soap Company. Its all natural, I switched to the Tea Tree/Candela and my skin problems cleared up and I haven't gone back to regular soap.
The Rose Garden is gorgeous.
Go to Tin Shed for breakfast, worth the wait.
Don't know about hotels though.

LOL
that is the funniest response i think i have ever read on NT

there used to be a few Portland threads but the archives aren't working....
The Jupiter Hotel has funky Ikea furnished rooms attached to a pretty cool bar/music venue. The bar can get pretty loud so only stay here if your into staying out past 3.

From there you can walk across the Burnside Bridge to the Saturday Market ( held on Sundays too) to buy some cheap hand made hippy products like soaps, wood carved signs, hemp clothing, pipes..etc. It's basically a street fair.If you want something a little more expensive check out Hotel Lucia.
Right downtown closer to shopping in The Pearl and on NW 23rd st.Hawthorn District is pretty cool grungy.hippy.indy place
Albert St Art district is well worth checking out.

And yes the Rose garden is beautiful and has great views of the city with Mt Hood in the distance.

The Tin Shed sucks, don't go. The food is decent, but the waitstaff reek of BO, so bad that I lost my appetite, no kidding. Nasty. All style, no substance.
What kind of stuff do you like to do?
- fooler0
Portland is notorious for bad service. All the wait staff here think they are to cool to serve you food and are prob in a band or a web designer or both.

i just stayed at the jupiter this week. its relatively cheap for a boutique hotel, and definitely modern minimal. they need some art on the walls. but for one night it was good. the doug fir is attached to it. open until 4 am, great for drinks and breakfast food with syrup!

good job fooler. i think you covered everything.
if you have a car or can get one, check out (i know, i know) Multnomah falls or something in the gorge.
- fooler0
everytime someone comes to visit it's always the same thing, Saturday Market then Mult Falls... I guess they're both fun the first few hundred times. Actually the falls are amazing here. When we where in Hawaii someone convinced use to drive half way to Hanna to see some falls. When we got there they where pretty disappointing compared to Multnomah Falls.

Agreed, Multnomah Falls is very impressive. If you go, hike to the top.

am I missing any? That's a lot of drinking for a wed night.

yeah, i could care less about the Saturday Market - i don't even know why it's so big here, it's just about crap 'crafts' sold under a bridge next to all the vagrants.
if anything - go to the Farmer's Market in the Park Blocks in SW near PSU. that at least has a better setting.

bridgeport on hawthorne is a rad place to eat and has great beer. lots of people prefer widmer but i like the bridgeport.
jupiter is a nice classy place to stay that isn't downtown.
rose garden is probably in bloom by now, i haven't been up there yet.
but it's a great town, just get a bus pass and hang out. can't really go wrong just walking around.

I got stuck in for three days while I was waiting for my sister to drive up since she was moving there. I was unemployed, in college and broke back then, and ended up at a hostel...but that's beside the point.
It rained just about every day that I was there, so I was forced into places.
Powell's City of Book on West Burnside is worth checking out.
We pretty much lived at The Roxy because not only are they 24 hours, but their food is pretty delicious and cheap, the menus were fun, the jukebox is insane, and you get a full karaff of coffee...which is rare in Philadelphia.
That's pretty much all I remember from that particular visit...oh, I did catch Stephan Malkmus and Le Tigre shows and the weed is pretty stellar there.
I'm sure this didn't help, but good times.

the roxy is great for breakfast. The menu consists of specials like "Ravers breakfast: OJ and toast". The Dolly Parton: 2 stacks of flapjacks. The Antonio Banderas omelette. The Don Johnson omelette: same as the Antonio without the spicy sausage....Plus you get to hang out with transvestites and the punk rockers

plus it only rains once a year...
November-May
- stringbean0
really? you'd recommend the Roxy? if it's sarcasm - then that's hilarious!
i'd say Bread and Ink on Hawthorne and 36th.
Maybe Beaterville on N Lombard or Gravy on Mississippi
- fooler0
I don't mind the roxy sometimes it's fun to dine with the freaks.
Gravy is ok if you don't mind waiting for a table for an hour.
