what do you usually sell an FLA for to a client?
i made an app that loads in FlashPapers, it has an XML menu, highlight function ... bout 300 lines of code or so...
they want the FLA which im cool with..just not sure what to charge

intellectual property = $$$$

i figured as much ... just not sure how much ;) hehe
- enjine0
how long did it take to make it?
- Point50
arm and a leg
- kinetic0
i would say roughly 12 - 20 hours (it has been on and off for a week ... changes...shit like that)
its pretty advanced...lots of AS...really dynamic solution

how much would they pay to buy it from elsewhere. If they buy the app can they resell?? have you thought about licensing it to them?

(Jul 13 06, 11:30)not sure really? the original agreement was to provide SWF and .EXE ...how they want the FLA file

I would be wary of selling them the fla, dig a little you might find out wht they want to do with it, if you talk from a licensing perspective they will know your serious and may give you some clues to what they intend on doing (and therefore its worth)
what does the app do?
- kinetic0
it loads in FlashPaper2 swfs via XML
once the paper is loaded in, it generates thumbnails (just graphical representations) of the pages.
you can also highlight stuff in the document with a highlight tool

sounds relatively simple (not to be condesending to you) - what market it is aimed at?
- kinetic0
hehe...yea, guess it isn't all that advanced ... pretty dynamic tho
biotech / pharmaceutical (sp?) industry
- UndoUndo0
hey, dont get me wrong - for the layman that's no walk in the park!
biotech / pharmaceutical (sp?) industry -> plenty of $$ there. I'd check out their intentions, if it wasnt part of the original agreement the balls in your court

Twice your total billing for design + programming time.

the contact i have there said they usually like to have FLA files for "their record"
also, in case he ever wanted to open it up and play around with it
??
anyways...thanks for the help mate...appreciate it
- UndoUndo0
no problem, I wouldnt buy the @for the record' line - it wasnt part of yr deal and it has a worth.
good luck fella

Ture, they can have the swf but the fla stays home. If they need any updates, they know where the file is.
You could set up another agreement that they cannot sell, or release the product code in any form. Pretty much a confidentiality agreement in case they have other plans for it.

A lot of producers who contract me and people I know always say shit like...
"We always get the fla's from our contractors..."
Make them pay through the nose. They're trying to cut you out.

or externalize all the .as and just give them the .fla
sneaky sneeky
of course I would publish it and make sure it works if i was on the other end...

i would mark up the source 50-100% for a license. in other words, they can modify for their use but not resell. you are also free to modify and reuse as you see fit.
if they want to own it outright, 200-300% of the original bid.
good luck.
