    Hey NT people!

I'm an Art Director in Advertising right now and I've been headhunted for a position directing a marketing department. The company is very corporate, the pay is about 50% more than what I'm making now. I'm just not sure if the change is for me...

Will a marketing Dept. destroy my Eternal Soul?! I'll have creative control and would be able to do some interesting things with campaigns. I'm also afraid of the whole design by committee nonsense that's going on in corporate design.

It also might be a great opportunity for me to use some of my favourite agencies as suppliers...

Your thoughts, opinions and experiences are greatly appreciated.

first of... congrats sparkle!!!! Anytime you get the chance to double the amount of income your hard work makes... ^5's are in order (whether you choose to accept your new position or not).

"I'm also afraid of the whole design by committee nonsense that's going on in corporate design."

... ouch... I HATE WORKING FOR CORPS for that specific reason - in the end, the 'project' is very linear and flat as the bueracracy (sp?) has had a chance to wreck it.

You have a ton of pros and cons you've listed - sounds like you've already put some thought into it and you're stuck w/the 'passion vs. money' issue.

you love doing what you do... because you're passionate about it - my guess is you've been an 'artist' your whole life... right? :)

ugh, given the wonderful list of pros and cons you've already supplied - using 'good' vendors , having a lot of creative lead... vs. the 'group decision' in the end that will obviously linearize alot of the uniqueness in your ideas...

... i think this is going to come down to a $$ decision... because it has the potential for some 'fun'... but i think you 'know' in the end that alot of what is produced won't be as 'unique' to your original creativity.

... tough call. You have a wife and kids? :) take the job if you do... else - ugh... tough call.

Sparkle-Diddy ... I'd say go with the money, haha.

    That's just me.

In fact, I didn't read the entire thing and I'll go back and do that now.

Also, click your own info, and then laugh.

i think it's about positioning of things.

if i were asked to be a marketing director, i'd seriously consider it knowing that i'll now have very stong influence in business aspect and ability to transform the business with a great marketing and creative strategy, though i don't have any experience in it...

aveda's marketing director, Mark O'Berski, is coming from creative side. he was in one of AIGA conference a couple years ago and has addressed many of pros and cons. if you can get hold of the dvd, you should watch it.

First off, thanks for the wishes of congratz, I can hardly believe that this came up today, I told them that I needed some time to make a decision, so I'm not feeling presure there at least.

    And now, my responses:

you love doing what you do... because you're passionate about it - my guess is you've been an 'artist' your whole life... right? :)

Yeah, I'm an idealist, but I do know that the amount of 'art' that makes it into any of my projects is pretty slim because of marketing departments sticking their mucky fingers in the mix.

Thanks tk for the heads up on the DVD, it sounds like the perfect resourse for me. I'll have a look around for it.

There's no Tiny Sparkles, only a Mrs. Sparkle, she's another creative and understands the dilema here. The future is something that I should look at here... There are not so many opportunities to get out from behind the computer for an arty type these days, but i'm not even 30 yet so is it time to switch to the cushy corporate job?. I definately enjoy the strategic side of things so that's exciting.

I've got to go now as my stream of consiousness was leaking onto my keyboard.

    Thanks again, peeps.

I have found that being in the marketing game has made me a better creative - I have used it to make my process more dynamic. you can always go back to what you are doing now - take the opportunity to expand your bag of weapons - you won't regret it.

    congrats
