im working on a 300dpi doc and illustrator wont let me save
it says "the combination of art and text cannot be rasterized at this size" .. the banner is 2 feet by 4 feet (trying to save as TIF)
anyone know how i can get around this? im not a print guy ;)

have you tried converting the text to outlines?
do you have non-vector images? they might be too big...edit in photoshop and scale to size then save it again then place it back to illustrator....
have u tried exporting rather than save as?

tried all of the above
the images are raster tif images that where scaled to size in PS and placed in illy
its weird...never had this problem before

if i bring it down to 200dpi it will save it but 300dpi doesn't work for shit

are the images embedded in the doc or linked, maybe try both ways

At 2x4', you can sometimes cheat, and get away with 200dpi. You can also try saving it as a eps, and opening it in photoshop at 300dpi. I think it's a memory issue.

stay in illy. you should probably be building at 1/2 or 1/4 size of the final. for banners, most signmakers will accept the final @150 dpi. do the math and that means 1/2 at 300 dpi, or 1/4 at 600 dpi. it's a smaller art board to work with, and skirts the issue of quark's maximum 48" page size. you shouldn't have to rasterize anythig manually, just save it out as a tiff, though i can't imagein they wouldn't accept the ai file. double check the specs with the vendor to be sure.

for large format some people even go down to 100 dpi
