Hi guys, I need to make a decision so maybe you can give me your opinions. Jox you are encouraged to participate :)
I'm driving an 2005 Audi A6 3.2 Quattro right now and even though I love my car to death it seems that I got a lemon car. First the rear differential went bad, then I had to take it to the dealer again because of vibrations I had, and now after 3 weeks they tell me that they have to replace the whole transmission.
Now I've figured something bad was going on with the car so I started talking to the sales guys about breaking out of the contract and replacing a vehicle. The good thing is that Audi of North America is really helpful and in rare cases like mine they are willing to help out with a few thousand dollars to help you get into a new vehicle without losing any money and the dealership is even ready to cover the costs of any transport of my future car even if it's located on east coast.
Now I'm looking into buying a new car, it doesn't necessarily have to be an Audi but I am an Audi guy and it's certainly a lot easier at this moment.
I was looking at 3 cars, Audi S4 Sedan, Audi S4 Convertible and Audi A6 4.2 Quattro. The reason why I want to go with something stronger is because even though I loved my A6, it lacked that power. It was a 255HP Quattro but the car very heavy. A6 4.2 still seems like a slower car. It's a big difference between a 0-60 in 6.1 secs for A6 and 0-60 in 5.3secs for S4.
Give me your personal opinions about these cars and what would be your choice. RS4 is way too pricey for a sport compact sedan and at $70k I can definitely beef up any S4 to go beyond the RS4 power. There's also a question of S4 Convertible. This is a beautiful car, but it's heavier then an S4 sedan and it's noticably slower. But the experience of driving a performance convertible is truly incredible.
I need to make this decision pretty soon, because I have to get this resolved next week.
Thanks.

Sorry about your lemon bozzy and even sorrier you didn't tell me earlier because then I would've hooked you up with some test drives over at Streets of Tomorrow (US audi tour) where you got to drive everything from the A3 to the RS4.
if i were you I'd seriously look into the new S6 V10 that is due this fall. I had a Lex RX400h as a company car for 8 months up till a few weeks ago that was nothing but plain trouble (including the two others in our company fleet) so don't let anybody tell you jap cars don't suck.
And no you can't make an S4 into an RS4 no matter how hard you try, it's according to all major places the best car in the world right now. S4 is a cruiser you don't race with, RS4 is a hardcore supercar that beats everything in its class, M3 CSL included.. My '04 S4 is supercharged and puts down about 470 awhp, but doesn't come close in terms of chassis and overall performance etc to my (soon here) '07 RS4.
Have you considered the Q7?

Yeah I heard about the event you are talking about, unfortunately I wouldn't have time to go there anyways.
As for S6, I was seriously considering it and even talked to my dealership to order it, but the situation with my A6 at this moment requires me to act quickly. So I would need a car pretty much right away.
You are probably right about S4 not coming close in construction of RS4, however you can definitely beef it up as you did right?
After a year and a half of driving my A6 I need an adrenaline rush bro. Q7 even though a stunning SUV with the best of technology and interior styling is still in the performance range of my A6.
I drove an S4 and was really impressed regardless. It is a performance car nonetheless, but more of a daily driver too. It's a performance car with convenience. And this is what made me interested.
Btw, I was at a VIP event here in Phoenix where I could inspect the new S6 upclose and personal and I gotta say WOW. This car is SICK. But starting at $75k it's not really a bargain, even though compared to M5 it is.

The newer (06+) S4s are indeed closer to the RS4 because the torsen diff is now (40/60) and doesn't feel as nose heavy. Getting a 50+ K A6 might end up more expensive than a 70+ RS4 because they are insanely rare and might not depreciate as much, at least not over here.
By the sound of things, maybe you should look into picking up a daily driver and a weekend toy to haul some ass and get kicks?
Old S4 2.7Ts are ridiculously cheap and 5 grand into it and you're 500 hp ^_^ And unless you need to freight more than 2 butts on a regular basis, an A3 2.0T could be your daily? A flash and 260 hp.. not too shabby for such a small car and they're super sweet with the panorama roof.

just answer the question. let's say you look at the time and instead you see some seizure inducing interface. what to do?

i hear you on the 2.7 A6- they are boats and w/o some severe $$ tuning, i find them boring. even then, you still have the horrible design turbo access to replace those little K06 hairdryers every 25k.
jox is spot on- a tuned neuS4 is no where near an RS4. they are completly different beasts. depending on your tastes, the convertible S4 could be nice, but for the weight trade off, makes it pretty lame.
jox- i am suprised you went with the supercharger on the 2.8- they are renoun time bombs. which make charger are you running? did you have Mihnea tune it for you by chance?
Also, there are some phenominal dealer-deals on trade-in 4.2 A6 right now in the states. these were originally pretty babied to *many* of the drivers as the price tag was pretty high. but mated with the 6 speed and sport package, they are a blast and truely can be tuned a bit for a more explosive experience. i still would't supercharge it though.
i can recommend several great places for more info if you like. oh, and i am amzed at your great experience w/ AoA- they are rediculously documented asshats w/ stuff like this. glad to hear it though and good luck w/ the search.

Hold out for the RS3.
I love my A3 2.0T.

who drives audis?
- alkanenine0
s60r t5, saab 9-3 sport sedan, 911 carrera c4s :D ive driven the saab, very nice ride. i could see it getting boring though.
i personally don't enjoy audi's because of they are electrical nightmares and very sloppy to drive. if they fixed those two things they would be great cars. yeah the rs4 fixes that with the engine layout placement and the diffs, but otherwise the A6, A4, S4 when pushed turn into understeer machines.
how about the new jag xk7? i think that is a pretty sweet car. has the lines of an aston martin, soon will have a supercharger. :D

well, sounds like you want a audi so if I were you I would pick the S4. Its acturlly goes better in the curves then M3.
I wouldn't go cab, unless you rather like to cruise around.
