first thing for passing that 'test' is to ask a whole sh**load of questions... good identity design has deep thinking behind it, and a strong understanding of who the company is and how they'd like to be perceived in the marketplace
if I gave that test out, and a designer took it and just did some cool typography, I'd send them packing

Well, the first thing you need is a creative brief before you begin and 50% down. Tell them you'll be happy to freelance for them but it won't be free.

yeah, that's an odd situation... they're going into business with no ID? are they a design firm?
don't hook it up for free amigo
- Shift5250
design? that is so broad?
sorry dude, i'm a little drugged up here. allergies.
my advice don't look at what other people are doing. get inspiration from different things. close your eyes and clear your mind of things.

At a first glance, I thought you were asking for a crit and I was like "oh boy, he doesn't know what he's getting into".
Don't have anything to add other than a good luck.

you're just nervous about being 'tested'. You can do this!
- Moo0
lol your right xenicon
- Moo0
wow it not my design but looking at it doesn't inspire me at the moment

design firm identities are the toughest to design as well – the debate always comes up whether to push a house-style through the logo, or to keep it super simple and flexible... like using a slick but not too stylized typeface, and minimizing graphic elements/eye-candy

i just throught it out there to show you how simple they kept the logo. although it did remind me of the 'ameritrade' logo.
