hi all.
i'm starting an online 'zine of design/comics/writing/etc and was wondering about format -- would people be willing to download and browse through a pdf, or should this be a flash project? i'd much rather go pdf but i'm not sure viewers will go for it...what do you think?

What the hell is a webzine?
It sounds intriguing, please tell us more.

(May 25 06, 11:41)Especially since there is something wrong with my Acrobat, as it doesn't open in the browser. Instead, I have to save the file and then open it inside Acrobat, after I open that first.

i sometimes forget that not everyone has Preview, which makes opening and using pdfs way easy (but alas, it is mac-only).
the idea for the webzine came about mostly because my girlfriend and i want to make a print mag but lack the cash to make it as beautiful as it should be...plus if it's online anyone could look at it. both of us make comics so it would have some of that, but also photography, drawings, writings, anything two-dimensional.
html? why would i do that?

Are you a web person or a traditional graphic design person? I've got a similar project that started up late last year, and we went the PDF route because we're graphic designers and wanted to simulate a printed piece...
If people are interested in your content, they'll download the PDF and enjoy it...even if it's a potential (minor) hassle. Just watch your file size.

opening pdfs in a browser is a risky bussiness. I happened crash my vbrowser multiple times just because I tried to do that. I don't do it anymore.

I don't know ... their used to be some site that had dope people contribute to a PDF and it just got TDS.
I can't even remember them anymore, haha.

I would make it Flash, you have more backend flexibility and more creative potential from contributors. But, I don't know what your long term plans are.

i think html is way to go as well, especially if you have lots of written material. reading text in flash=the worst.
ive never once even bothered downloading a pdf magazine

A casual browser may not bother with the PDF. But if there's an artist in that webzine they NEED to see, they will. So it may matter on your content a bit as well.

Much prefer to download a pdf than wait/navigate a flash movie.

You could always set up an .exe/ Mac Projector version for Flash if you wanted. That way you could use all the Flash 8 goodies without worrying about plug in issues.
One of those benefits is custom text antialiasing.

I used to download beast and bloodwars. If it's good I think people will download it.
