I just got one a week ago to try and use an alternative to a mouse for general computer purposes (not just painting is PS/illy).
I don't think it was really designed to be used for that, and its pretty annoying to have to pick up and set down a pen every 2 seconds. I don't do much painting in PS these days so I think i might actually return mine.
Maybe i didn't give it enough of a shot. What do you guys think?

so for those who swear by the wacom...do you use it 100% of the time instead of a mouse, or just for drawing?
- ribit0
just for sketching...but I never have time to sketch :(
- Sven_sk0
wacom just in photoshop and painter. i use the mouse the everything else.
- Rand0
what model/size is a good starter?
- nocomply0
Yeah my wrist was getting tweaked from too much time on the mouse..thought a tablet would be a good solution but it turned out just to be frustrating. I got a more ergonomically correct keyboard drawer and I think that will help more than a tablet.
Since I don't sketch much I think i'll be returning mine.

I use the wacom with pen exclusively in photoshop and use the wacom with mouse exclusively for everything else.

(May 19 06, 12:53)i just have a really little one its pretty old too. you don't need some big huge wacom tablet. littlish one works just fine.
- barbtastic0
i use the mouse + the pen, depending on what i'm doing. i use the mouse if i'm using indesign or quark, use the pen if i'm drawing in illustrator or ps
- peteski0
pen/mouse combo. its either that or carpal tunnel.
6 x 8 since '96.

To answer Rand's question...I think the expensive models with large drawing areas are more of a marketing ploy than anything else. I bought the smallest, cheapest, $99 model and it can accomplish a hell of a lot.
I think you only need to spend more if you are a serious illustrator.

i agree, the big one is annoyingly cumbersome. i am good with the 6x8. also fits in a bag better.
