Why is it that when I go to 'save for web', the gif colors are all random and not optimized for the image?
Could it have something to do with that I'm on a mac and it's a screendump?
How can I change it?

what Optimize settings are you using? I know if I use Reduction: Custom its awful, I use Selective, 256 colors, Dither: Diffusion.

Yeah, this goes for all presets, 256, 64, 32 etc (and the image is just pink and black...)
It's just the screencaptured images that give me problems, any other document optimizes like it should.
Thanks.

Have you tried to convert the color pallet to index 256 or lower first?
Once you do this you'll have better control over the color pallet when saving for web.

What 'color reduction algorithm' are you using? Ensure it's not to 'web' (try selective or adaptive first). PShop used to, if I remember correctly, have problems with gif saves when the native colour mode was CMYK, so try changing it to RGB if necessary.

...check your channels too!
Personally, when I'm saving gifs, I always Copy-Merged, paste into a new document, then Save-For Web..
..or use an action :)
