Need to remain anonymous here.
Just started sending out my work, inquiring about job possibilities.
I got a response immediately - the place is about ready to hire but just want to meet me 1st.
Really flattering and overwhelming.
How do I hold them off while I compare with other opportunities that may come up? Or should I even hold them off?
I'm afraid if I tell them I'm not ready I will lose the opportunity. but I don't want to just take the first thing - I want to find the best job I can.
HELP!

You don't look a gift horse in the mouth mate

I know it! Just freaking out here. Like i said, it's flattering and all. I just don't want to be a fool and maybe miss out on something better.
- jevad0
So you think you can find something better? Define 'better'?
- Jaline0
There is always the potential for that to happen when you apply to multiple places at once, depending on when they said they would need you to start working in the job description.
If this is really a great, rare, opportunity and you need a job, then take it first. Unless you know you can get another job soon.
In my experience, employers may not consider you again if you say 'you want to hold off for a bit' or something equivalent. It works more on their terms, and if someone is also qualified other than you then the job may be presented to them.

Go there and see what it's like. It's hard putting 'better' in perspective when you don't know what you're comparing. I'm sure if they like you, they won't mind you asking if you can start in 2 weeks or whatever. (which would be the time you wait for others to respond)

By better I mean:
Better clients/projects
Better payAlthough better projects/clients is vastly more important.
It's all about quality, and the idea of taking one job and missing another where I could get better projects drives me nuts.
thanks for bearing with me here.

Is it a contract agreement? Because otherwise you can leave later if you really want to. Or do what jox said. Say you can start in two weeks, or hope they will allow you to start later.
- Jaline0
...I know I would feel bad about leaving after a few weeks though...
- incog0
true, i don't have much of a frame of reference. All I know is what projects they put in their folio/client list.
I could say it's probably not the 1st on my list, but still could be really cool.
But I mean seriously they are laying the pressure on heavy.
And I'll probably have to fly myself there, although that's worth it.

I don't think it is contract, but we did not get into that much detail quite yet.
I think 2 weeks is probably out of the question. The move is quite a distance and I will need to give 2 weeks notice on top of that.
- jevad0
Sounds like you have already made your mind up.
- Jaline0
It's tough to say. You know more info than we do about the company, so it comes down to taking a chance.
- skelly0
take it. if you want to keep looking keep looking. on the chance that something way better comes along, you can cross that bridge then, but if nothing else comes along at least you have a job.
- incog0
so you're saying I should fly out there?
not trying to sound like a selfish prick here - just trying to be wise about this.
- Jaline0
Okay, now it seems like we're forcing you. Jevad's right about you having your mind made up, haha.
- incog0
So you're saying because I am hesitating that means I've decided I don't want to work there?
- jox0
You can't fully judge a job until you've tried their snacks. A flight out there isn't gonna tie you up forever. Do it! You can always leave. And if you don't like it, you've at least given it a chance.
- incog0
That's good advice. Thanks again for bearing with me.
Last time I looked for a job it took begging, bribing, and sexual favors just to get an interview.
Different this time. Threw me for a loop, they did.
- Jaline0
Yes, do what jox said.
- jevad0
So you're saying because I am hesitating that means I've decided I don't want to work there?
