Does anybody have any experience doing color separations for output in screenprinting. It's pretty hard to find any good tutorials on this.

This method was using photoshop 6. Just wonder if there is a better way with CS2.
Has anyone tried any of the auto sep programs/plugins. They're pretty expensive $$$$

You basically select all of the same color, make a layer, fill it with black and name it by its color. In the end everything will be filled with black.
How many colors are u working with?
CS2 - select a color, then >> select,>> same >> fill color, etc.
Is this what you mean?
That is basci color separation as I know it.

This seems like it would be very difficult to do from a photograph. Should you convert it into duotone first if you wanted a two colour print.
I understand that what you get on screen is never what you get when you print. I would just like to experiment with the images by using different colours for the two screens.
Also what's the best method for trapping?

u doing this yourself or more professionally
when we sreen print photo bsed stuff, we always find it easier to go to superfine halftones and choose spots from there
many times we will break up a phot o into highs mids lows in terms of tonage and bitmap all of them and then lay them on top of each other
maybe too simple of a look for you but you'd be surprised how good it can look just 4ft back
mostly rock poster techniques mind you

This is just for my own personal work.
How would you separate the high/mid/low tones onto separate layers?

play with adjusted looks that you like, at different angles and then save in different channels

but mind you, i am talking about for print - not clothing
