Version Control app

Anyone have any recommendations for a version control app? Something that can run, keeps a log of the revision history and allows for strict check in/out functionality.
In the past I have used PVCS, but that - in the form that we had it - was very cumbersome, but it worked very well. Someone mentioned using Eclipse so that is another alternative.
Anyone have other options?

Microsoft Visual Sourcesafe
Might be something better out there but I use this daily. Very easy to set up directories, check out/check in, and to roll back files

I have heard good things about Rational ClearCase

but I think it ties in with WebSphere: http://www-306.ibm.com/software/…

Thanks for the feedback. both perforce and subversion look great. what some people here might like about perforce is how it works within eclipse. i like what both have to offer. i'll shop these around the office. thanks again guys!

Visual source save plugs into flash. I use that daily, it's pretty good.
