I am in the process of opening a dress shop (contemporary women's clothing, but I like calling it a dress shop) — financing is good, the designers are great, but I am having the worst time trying to find a physical space. Either the space is beautiful and I am in a neighborhood of fluffy older ladies OR the space is awful (and astronomical in price) but has marvelous foot traffic...
And so I consider the online potential. Would you (or gentlemen, your lovely counterparts) be interested in a virtual dress shop, with an etsy kind of shopping experience organization... And, to have a bricks & mortar presence, we would like to have designer showcases, maybe bimonthly, at galleries or short-rent spaces... in order to have shopping events where you get to interact with real people... but at the same time minimize risk, hoping to someday find an ideal physical location...
this might be the girlshop model crossed with a tupperware party, but what do you think?

for sure this a great idea if you are going for the hi-end having the monthly show/party at a gallery would be cool and get lots of press handled well. I guess the issue is women and the tactile experience of shopping and going out with the girls to try stuff on - that is a big part of the appeal and to remove it would be a gamble!! Buying clothes from an online pressence is cool for say t-shirts and accessories but anything else you kinda need to try it on!!

you are exactly right — and that is the one piece I am nervous about... I like buying things online because it is easy, and there is usually a good return policy... but would I really want to buy a higher priced item (say a $150 - $250 dress) from an online retailer unless I tried it on?
We are aiming at a high end market, but I wonder how many high price point items get sold online — even from bluefly... anyone know where I might find some handy stats?

Internet sales should be the next thing forward! Check out these couple of independent stores that have began to branch out to internet sales rather than opening another physical store.

these shops I personally know (and sell to) have increased their sales massively since they've made their website. The key is to build a good contact list and make sure a lot of people know you exist. By the way check out my website, I've been selling online for two years now and it's quite good. Hope it helps!
