Hi. I'm helping with a project where people will be putting items up for sale and (hopefully) others will be buying them. I'm trying to gather information on common practice for developing the backend.
Should it be done in ASP or would PHP be ok for something like this. Consider that the databases will be holding rather important information about who's made purchases, how much the purchase is for, etc. There will also be member accounts and submission fees.
I realize there should be someone hired (and there will be), I just need to know what we'll need in terms of a developer.
Thanks.

no real difference between php and asp for the question you asked

Great!
We were hoping to be able to use PHP.
I've got one more question.
Is there anyway to have someone code something that would accept a paypal payment from a member, take 10% off the top and divy it out to another member, without any human contact? If so, is that also safe in PHP.I'm a little worried about the security of the process, perhaps I shouldn't be.
Any help on what job description I'm looking for here would be nice. (just a standard PHP developer ?)
Thanks again.

yep safe to do in php, the developer must be aware of the secuirty issues and such, so look for a good one. when you say divvy out you mean make a payment or hold a credit for payment later??
you need a php developer with ecommerce experience

thanks a bunch. I'm talking about an actual payment. Everything should be going down in the next month.

splittin up one payments into multiple payments will be more difficult. it might be better to run accounts and then have payment periods once a month etc, much more manageable
