I can't believe how hilariously brilliant this film is. I'd been meaning to watch it for quite some time, and then I discovered that the writer of The Life Aquatic is in fact the director of this film, so I couldn't wait for it to be released on dvd. With that said, I was still amazed. It's so fresh and original and razor sharp in its complexity. The way I see it is, any film that combines posters of Vitas Gerulaitis, constant shit-talking ping pong battles between father and son, a 12 year old rubbing his jizm on the locker of the girl he likes, a beard as prolific as Jeff Daniels', a high school student plagiarizing Pink Floyd's Hey You and nobody realizing it, and a Novelist/Professor sleeping with his hot writing student (Anna Paquin is just sexy in a dirty dirty way), has to be a masterpiece. Add that to the first realistic depiction of what it's like to grow up with parents who have joint custody, and the constant back and forth bickering and snitching about who's sleeping with who, and well - for me anyway, it was like watching my own childhood on the big screen.
Perhaps this is old news to many of you, but just wanted to wholeheartedly endorse it,
Best regards.

Hey kj,
This film was pretty great, except for the spreading the seed part, which was a bit questionable. Although I'm sure it happens all the time, haha.
I did love the smallest moments though, like when the mother peeled off a piece of her dry lip, or when she came back from the bathroom and her son noticed the smell.
It felt very real.

I loved the parent teacher conference where the kid got in trouble for masterbating at school, and Jeff Daniels was like, hey, kids do this all the time, how do you know the semen was his? And the wife asked him, have you ever done this sort of thing, and he was like, I'm not going to answer that question...lol
And even though it was a bit overkill, the William Baldwin Ivan Lendl tennis pro who kept saying "brotha" after every sentence was funny.

check out the director/writer's other movies Kicking & Screaming and Mr. Jealousy. if you liked Squid and the Whale you'll love those too. they're super low budget, but the writing is brilliant.

It was dead-nuts emotionally in terms of what it feels like being a teenage kid going through your parents divorce, right down to the editing and the scene phrasing. Really truthful and really funny.
