Undo wouldn't even look twice at my CV.
I agree with what you're all saying, especially what they've done previously and using proper semantic mark up but this is also a conversation point - Why did you do that, why did you do this etc.
Anyways - w're digressing - any one used / done anything similar?
Oh, Para, moth - I stuck it to the man; got NT unblocked.

are you going to make them do this with just notepad and no internet access?
- mr_snuggles0
sounds like fun. at my last interview they put me in a big maze with a piece of cheese waiting for me at the exit...

I'ce done it Gordy and had the same experience with ppl who are really confident....all mouth but then dont have the goods.
We gae them full access to DW and the internet and set up a little test in flash (the job was flash related). I would start by getting them to talk about the reasons for xhtml, use of divs and redefining standard tags and get them to redesign a simple table in xhtml.
We always said that they didnt have to complete it, but explain what they were trying to do.
Goog luck its never easy interviewing

It's a b!tch - it really is. For the last round of interviews - we had some bod that said in reply to "What do you feel you can bring to the department"....
"Classy Excitment"
I mean, WTF, Really. I swear the guy was st0ned too.
- UndoUndo0
ha ha was that .steve?

"What do you feel you can bring to the department"....
I would've said cheese straws and beer every friday for the first month of employment.
- paraselene0
i'd hire you, moth.
- determinedmoth0

On second thought, I think thats a pretty good test for a jr. designer. At least to gauge their knowledge and how much you really need to teach them.
we have to deal with a designer with no front end knowledge and she's consantly sending over graphics that are the wrong size or wrong format.
I guess in addition to your test, real simple shit such as which file format you should use and knowing when to use a graphic vs. css...

I've had to do something similar before. A couple times at my old work I had to take someone's CV that was printed out of MS word and put it into CSS/HTML.
Give em something with lists in there. It'll be a good way to get an idea of their understanding for the inheritance hierarchy of elements within elements.
