This is a silly question, but I was wondering if someone can tell me what the difference is between a lead designer position vs. an art director title. Is a lead designer below or above an art director? And how is the responsibility different?

i'm a filmmaker...lead designer = director? then art director works for/with lead designer

where i work the lead designer varies from project to project... answering to the art director.

director.... comes up with ideas
designer... executes them...thats the way it is "supposed" to be.

lead designer = nobody to direct
art director = somebody to direct

That's so weird. Actually, that's what I thought originally, but I was being considered for an Art Director position, but was offered a lead designer position instead because the salary would be higher. Any thoughts?

there's a lot of gray areas, i would guess

Art director is an ad agency title. Senior designer (lead) for other design agencys (print etc...). I think Art director = senior designer just different areas of the business.

take the money screw the title, enjoy your job!

Normally, I don't put any weight into titles. I mean, how many times have you been on a project where an art director or an ACD had no clue about what they were doing? But on the other hand, psychologically, it seems like such a step backwards. The money does make things a little more difficult to refuse though.

Art Director maybe tells Lead designer what to do.
then
Art Director leaves work at 5.30pm
while
Lead Designer works until 11.30pm executing what the Art Director wanted him to do.
Art Director comes in the next day and slags off all you stayed late to do last night and tells you to do it again.
Lead Designer is working late again until 11.30pm meanwhile the Art Director goes home at 5.30pm again.
Maybe the more pay reflects on the amount of hours you are gonna have to spend grafting? :P

i feel its the art directors job to inform the lead designer of the job while its the lead designer who accomplishes the work while the art director does lines of coke in their offices asking where the job is.

The Art Director's role is to yell at the Designers to get the job done at 1 in the morning for a pitch the next day while playing soccer in the hallway.
