does the client own all the source files of the project after it's completed ?
my client is asking me for the .FLA of the site i did but we didn't do a contract or anything... it still belongs to me right ?

It depends how it is stated in the contract. Since you don't have one it is up in the open. I think they could easily claim ownership to them if they expected they would be receiving them.

were you paid hourly or did you quote the project?

It's up to you. No matter what, don't hand ANYTHING over until you are paid.

Hopefully this is a lesson to always have a contract. I can see how you might want to protect your code but consider your client. How will the update the site when needed?
I had a change of heart about this topic after working with someone on a pro bono AIGA project and the guy refused to turn over source files yet went MIA when it came to updating content.
If you won't turn over source files, have a strategy for your client to be able to easily update.
