maya vs 3dsmax

I'm currently using lightwave at my workplace for product design and am fed up, the program blows... so we are upgrading to either 3ds or Maya. I have lots of experience with 3ds and none with Maya. We have no PC here so its either buy a new PC workstation + 3ds or buy Maya (thier StudioTools package).
any thoughts?

i hear raves about 3DSM but I think that's because I don't know anyone who uses maya

used to use 3dsm. wonderful program but i'm positive that no one will ever know everything there is to know about 3dsm... it's just too damn big. haha.

maya does more doesn't it? i'm starting training in a few weeks but it's pretty intense even learning from a book. there are people who do full time courses on maya for 3 years and still don't know everything, so i depends it depends how much you need to know.

depends on what kind of work you do.
if you are doing architectural 3d, then 3ds is def better. if you are doing very complex fluid form and animation, then maya.

I'm just doing product design/modelling - I like Mayas StudioTools package, but just realized thats PC only as well. !@*(&#@

i used to be big into 3ds max...i went to school for 4d and learned both..there is no way to know EVERYTHING in a 3d software unless you are like super brainiac no life person...but definately you can learn alot...i personaly like maya better now.. both have features that edge out each other, its weird...if someone said you have to choose 3ds or maya i would use maya...no doubt.

I switched from 3DS to Maya, primarily because I made a PC to Mac switch a few years ago.
I really like Maya, if nothing else because I think there is a more "organic" usability. I found it very quick to learn. Of course, it's prolly as in depth as Max, but you might find it comes to quicker, as the program can be very intuitive.

yeah, i hear StudioTools is the best around for product design.
for any product design program, you are better off being on PC. Mac software is very limited.
i do some furniture and product design as a hobby and was using Rhino3D because it's so cheap. now trying to look for a similar product for mac but no luck.

Did you guys see that Autodesk (3ds) bought Alias (maya)... wtf? All the graphics software companies are merging.
I'm checking out a demo of Maya right now... i like it... not too much different than 3ds.

Maya and Studio Tools if you're doing product.
Maya and ZBrush for organic work.
Also take the time to learn MEL. It really speeds thing up.

Here is how my Cinema 4-D instructor described Maya... And I've worked on Maya for years, and agree with him.
Maya is so complex, you can really only get good results when working on a team, or in a firm, where different people work on different aspects of the project within Maya. Smaller apps, like C4D, or Max are much better and much faster for individuals who want better control over modeling, animation, and textures, all in one suite.

Go with Maya if you have the cash upfront. Also Maya runs nice on Macs :)

I like Maya, but it doesn't make sense for a small creative group, or a single freelancer. You should demo both before you buy.

MEL... is that a scripting language for maya? I get a headache just thinking about that.

Odd that you hate LW for modeling. It's still got fast/good modelling tools and great renders. But yes the gap is widening and LW is falling more behind. I am thinking of jumping ship myself.
Anyway we have Max and Maya at work. Both have their strongpoints, but Max seems to have stronger tools in a few areas. But if you are just doing modelling/product stuff Maya is cheaper and can be bought for PC or MAC. MAX only on PC.
It'll be interesting to see what Autodesk does with the two.
