Can anyone recommend a suitable 3d package to learn for simple character animation...a good example would be a recent job I've done for Adidas (see below)

I illustrated & animated these by hand but would love to build 3d models and animate them for future game sprites.
I've got some experience of 3d max (few years ago now) but that never seemed to be a good animation tool...
any recommendations, combos of software (the sprites will ultimately become png sequences)

have a look at swift 3d, also poser is a good idea.
swift 3d is a perfect little web style 3d animator and it has had some very very good updates.
