is there a way to setup Illustrator CS so that when starting a new file the swatch pallettes are empty or load a chosen set? In other words, I am tired of the Illustrator defaults getting in the way - I always have to delete them (those crappy gradients / default colors, ect.)
been wondering about this

i just save myself a few master template .ai files with the swatches, guides and pages sizes i commonly use.
with every new project, just copy the template file in finder, rename and open.

your standard illustrator startup doc is in the plug-ins folder in the app folder. just mess with that, clean it out or replace it as needed for jobs, just make sure the name's the same.
there is no pref workaround.
