anyone have any insight on getting a BFA in Graphic Design online? Is it looked down upon in the industry or is it considered acceptable? I have never been to college and I am considering doing this because it would be convenient for me since I work full-time and can't afford to go to school right now.

anyone?

Honestly, I don't even see how it's possible.

have you seriously tried to develope your skills with out going to school. where do you work?

Getting stoned in an online class chatroom with virtual classmates is no replacement for blowing off an actual class, making a new friend, going back to his place, getting high as a kite, wolfing down two pizzas, watching Poltergeist, then fingerbanging the college dropout that lives nextdoor to him.
It's not at all about the education, it's about the drugs.

I think it might be possible to learn some more skills, but you would be completely missing out on the group aspect of things:
looking at other people's work, critiquing and seeing how it differs in style and is better/worse than your own.

just try and get a job doing prepress somewhere where you can learn the programs while working on your design skills with collective local groups / co-ops or something of the sort. fuck school. i did it and you don't really need it if you are good. i learned more about design, production, and clients once i was out of the grip of my dated teachers.

my opinion of online universities bottomed out when I noticed in my web logs that one was using my website in a class on the use of type

Take the couple grand from the online course, blow it on all kinds of books from YWFT, read like mad, work for fun, and hang out with other people into the same thing.

It's probably only worth something if you get it from a recognizable liberal arts or design program to the people you're trying to work with.

I'd like to know more about this too... specifically in Vancouver.
I'd like to teach some day and most schools in Canada want you to have a BFA in design.

don't you want to go to classes and hang out with the other groovy art students?
that's the best part of this whole deal.

I would like to get the degree too, but I simply can't afford 4 years of no income + tuition fees. That's atleast $250,000 if you include what you aren't making.
I stick with CS courses at Emily Carr here, same instruction without the degree recognition.

I'm kinda in the same boat. Can't afford to not work and have a tuition fee at the same time. So my next option was academy of art university online or move to LA, live with relatives for the next couple of years and work / school part-time.

depends on how serious you are about your career then. or how tolerable your family is to live with.

Just get good at what you want to do. And make your links links.
