Can anyone suggest a decent web host company in the uk?
I was with 1&1 but 45mins waiting time to get through to them on the phone just aint cutting the mustard.

what were you calling about? all of the good hosting deals and good support seem to be not in UK (i.e. you shouldnt need to call them, so why host in UK?)

Just calling about billing mistakes and stuff.
I really just want a company in my own country, for peice of mind.
Although if you know of any decent deals outwith then please share sir.

Are meant to be ok.
I use 1and1 and can't say I have ever had a problem with them.

I had a lot of trouble with 1and1 ages ago and haven't used them since.
I don't know what sort of site you're looking to host (big/busy site/personal site?) but for small sites, I've been using http://www.web-mania.com.
They have a £20 a year deal with good space, db, decent traffic etc and email support levels are reasonable. Not tried phoning them though.
http://www.hostinguk.net have excellent phone support and are generally very helpful if you're looking for windows hosting but the deals aren't the best around.

Cheers man.
They look alright.
I guess 1&1 are good. There a pretty big company, so maybe I just got a couple of bad apples within it.

these are not in the UK, but they offer 24hr email support within 1hr (and they always are, sometimes minutes) and they are very reliable:

yeah, its just to host smallish sites.
When I called 1&1 to cancel i was put through to some chick in India that couldnt speak a word of the queens.
I just called back there to find out she didnt cancel anything and had written that i was looking to upgrade.
hehe...noice.

I've used 1&1 in UK... had to call/email/fax like 20 times just to cancel the contract as they had no clue what they were doing...
Really have found services like Media Temple and EV1 Servers in the US way cheaper (for the larger plans, not low-end), better services, with reliability of service and mail support so good you never would need to call them anyway...

Im using Compila, great price and i've had good phone and message support. Good feed back statistics also.

yup had big problems with 1&1, they are shite and their service is appaling.
this rang a bell:
"When I called 1&1 to cancel i was put through to some chick in India that couldnt speak a word of the queens."
was she also an arrogant unhelpful bitch, by any chance?

1&1 are good unless you need tech support. I generally dont need it so I dont have to contact them and that suits me fine.
- kelpie0
yeah, my tech support was to find out why they had taken my site away from me - I find out (after a great long wait|) that they have decided I don't live at my address (??) so I don't deserve a site. After much arguing with them to attempt to prove my location, I gave up and called them all a bunch of useless cunts. which they are.

(which was 30-odd pound down the swany, btw)

bandwidth costs in the uk are pathetic

I register all my domains with 1&1 as they are quite cheap and DNS changes are easy with them.
but cancelling domains is a nightmare! why on earth cant you just cancel using the phone or web, instead of filling in a form and sending it off to find out that they havent cancel the domain but are billing you for a new year, wankers!

I use easily.co.uk
I've had no problems with them changing hosts etc is also easy. Seem quite reasonable but I've not used anyone else so who knows!
- rasko40
holymoly you are lucky, I had hosting with easily a couple of years ago and getting out of it was a nightmare, NEVER get hosting from them.
