The target may be compromising legibility in the second option, but I thought it was fun :|
The brief is to appeal to anoraks and dads with their sons on a random day out. I thought the spitfire was the airplane with the most mass appeal, a bit like the jag S-type.
Font is 'Delux' by Johnathan Barnbrook (Mr. Snuggles - thanks for the suggestions).

looks kinda complex.. might want to simplify a bit more.

don't like the washed out colours of the spitfire much, try turning it into a silhouette instead

I think rather than the image and gradient, get it working in just simple shapes in black and white first.

I say, redraw it using 1 solid color. like spiralstarez said. and then maaaaaaaybe add 1 more.

The spitfire outline is terrible - wonky and jittery

Perhaps a bit more contrast on the airplane. I agree, it's a little washed out.

The first 2 suck but the 3rd is getting there. I'm not saying the 3rd is good but the plane makes all the difference... not the type of plane but the rendering. Make sure it isn't washed out like the first and try and pull in the type more with it.
