Ok all you supa nerds out there... Please help a brotha out!
the hard drive on my powerbook beeped at me yesterday and then promptly stopped working.
The good news... I'm super neurotic about backing up my work files... so i only lost a little bit of work, and nothing too hard to redo.
The bad news, I suck at backing up my personal stuff, i.e. my iPhoto stuff and more importantly my 60 gigs of music (about $1000 work of iTunes Music Store Stuff).
The worse news.. I'm POOR!
So my question is this... has anybody had any experience with using something like Data Rescue II? I simply can't afford to go to a data recovery specialist... they were talking about $1800 or more. So if any of you can offer any advice i would love to hear it.
Thanks

Data Rescue will take care of it.
- MrDinky0
DRII only recovered 10% of what i had..
- harlequino0
Really? I lost 600 gig worth of stuff and got it back.

How bad was the hrive though?
I have hope because while my computer won't mount the drive, when i booted off an external drive i could at least see it using disk utility... i couldn't do anything with it, but i could see it...
- MrDinky0
yeah i dont know what was wrong with it..
i lost about 500gig work of stuff..

harlequino, what was your situation?
My big fear is that i end up doing more damage trying the DIY rout...
- harlequino0
I did a major retarded thing. Thought I could connect my Mac formatted drives to a PC and transfer files. I know. Stupid fuck I am.
So after I freaked and shit in my pants, I downloaded Data Rescue. Cost about a benjamin. I let it run for several hours, and shazaam. Everything was pretty much cool.
HOWEVER!
Depending on how much you lost, you may have to find another blank to recover files to. Does that make sense?

Werd, thanks to both of you for your input
I do have a big ass external backup drive to drop the recoverd files to... which makes this sit very embaressing...
i'm still on the line about trying to pay someone and having a better chance of recovery or going diy

Just a bump to see if any one else has anything to add...
thanks again!

well, that happened to me and i took it to the repair. they tried to access by mounting the drive and but it was badly damaged.
so they suggested this place.
http://www.drivesavers.com/i decided to forget about recovery and start fresh. fortunately, most of my work stuff was backed up. lost about 30gig of other shit. anyways, once i save up enough, i'll send in my drive.

Yeah that was my thought as well, but since it's still under warrenty, i was going to give it to apple to replace the HD.. (and reaplace the defective screen at the same time) but apple won't give me the old HD back after they repair it... Boootay!

Yo, in the event that any of you have this problem...
$99 and 16 hours later... 100% recovery with Data Rescue II!

recover my files is also a kick ass program.
was installing new OS on wrong drive and cancelled format. drive went corrupt and recover my files was able to recover everything with filenames and folder structure.
- harlequino0
Right on dude. Glad it worked!
:)
- tkmeister0
maybe i should try it too?
i took it to tekserve and they couldn't get the data back. they recommended another pretty expensive place.

Yeah i started researching after homie was all $1800...
I don't know that it will work for every one, but you can test it for free and if it works it's only $99... totally worth it.

Data Rescue II helped me recover about 100 GB of mp3s that I accidentally trashed, but about half of them lost all the info and now I have hundreds of mp3's names M0001-M2500. I've tried to rename the ones I know but I get so much crap from FMT that I will never know the names again.
- harlequino0
Bet yo ass feels better now, huh?
- scoops0
Oh you bet it does! now if apple just doesn't determine that it was my fault i'll be all good... otherwise it's $600 for a new drive...

Slow and buggy, but a huge help...
