and what's this I hear about chewing coca leaves?
something about the elevation, or for *fun*? both?
- madirish0
ohhhhhhhhhhh i thought they kept saying 'cocoa'. maybe it was 4 days then...... ;)

I so want to go! My parents told me stories of how high it is and how not just anyone can climb those altitudes. So my wife doesn't want to go cuz she has asthma. Do you have any pics?
- madirish0
oh, i gots pics. :)
i am way too busy to edit and post them now, but i will soon and let you know.
just awesome though. don't let the altitude think she cannot do it either- highest pass is 4200m. not low by any means, but not crazy high. there are people 80 years old who do it.

Oh yeah, Great place/time. Highly recommended. That second day of hiking is a bear thought. straight up to 14,000 ft. for what seems like days and you can see the top the whole time. nearly broke my spirit.
- madirish0
oh yeah kyl3- know what you mean. but then our group decided to keep going and we did the second hardest pass in the same day.
did the whole thing in just short of 3 days rather than the 4 :)

back when I did it you didn't need to hire porters so we didn't. Did you carry your stuff or hire out?
- madirish0
wow! that would be rad, although our porters were so damn nice and the cook ruled. and now everyone must have porteros along the trip- but not to carry your things if you do not want. they carry the cooks tent, eating tent, ect.
my girlfriend and i carried our own things. totally worth it to carry your own.
- kyl30
It was pretty nice, but having guides to tell stories and what not would be cool too.
Those porters are so strong. Guys carrying 3 packs would run past us.

I saw this place in the Motorcyle Diaries .... but dam i bet seeing Live ....

i know how you feel madirish...it's been years since i've been there, but i still think of it often.
it is unusually beautiful and unique.
- cruz_azul0
where exactly is this .... i suk
- blastofv0
so you all did organized treks? is that the best/only way to go, or can you just train up there on your own and hike the last leg?
and did you all camp overnight (is that allowed?)
and how was the weather? i hear it's often clouded over...

El Caminos are overrated. Broncos are the new vintage.
- madirish0
yeah, the porters carry 30 kilos each and do the whole thing in sandals made or recycled car tires and timing belts. so durble and efficient.
they come screamin gpast you on the downs along the stone steps.
i think our porters could be k0na's biggest challenge should they be matched in a mortal combat.....

Peru by the way:

you HAVE to use a guide service to hike the Camino Inca- it is a law now.
it is a 4 day trek (if you do the entire thing) or a 2 day to do a much shorter version. otherwise, it is take the train to Cuzco, then bus up to the city. lame and expensive, but totally worth it if you have any sort of physical handicap or are a wuss.....
jk
;)
- blastofv0
cool, I'm sufficiently un-wussy enough to go for the 4 day trek I think.
anyone have recommendations for good guide services?
thx
