Mistake

Just finished a freelance project for a guy I used to work with, doing some flash banners for his company. The mistake I made was that I didn't set up a contract, I trusted the guy, but now am regretting it. He paid for the first project, but not for the second. I have been trying to track him down, and he owes me 480 bucks. I have learned my lesson, and will never work without a contract again.
Any advice for me to get this guy and his company to pay me?

I make the same mistake all the time. I gotta find an agent.

The AIGA has good, updated templates for contracts.
A must even for proposals. Clients will take you seriously if you send them a 10 page proposal with precise legal terms and safeguards. If they balk, walk.
I've made the same mistake as you a number of times also.
Oh and if they ask you to do spec work, ask them if they would go to three dentists to have their teeth cleaned and only pay the one they like.

Thanks all. Good info indeed Gramme. I will keep that in mind for the future.
