I can use flash but only the basics. I want to learn AS so I can make better flash sites. Like custom photoslideshows with transitions, custom preloaders and all that kind of stuff. But I have never learned any real programming language so I have no idea about IF statements and ELSE IF and all that. I'm dumb so whats the best way to learn? any good books that explain that fromt he beginning?

Start with the book of Colin Moock "Actionscript the definitive guide" or try the books of Friends of ED.

i made a thread on this yesterday!
and yeah, everyone says the moock books are good

google kirupa or actionscript and you will find some great tutorials for free

i would recommend basic programming techniques first.
jumping right into a mook book or tutorial make it hard to learn. yea you can get something to work but you dont know why its working or how to take that and apply it elsewhere.
if you are very serious about it,
start with the very basics.learn what a variable is. a constant, a public variable, a private variable, the types of variables (string, boolean, integer, etc) what typecasting is.
move to basic variable manipluation
move to a simple if statement. if else. then a switch statement.
then for loops, while loops, do while. learn what the purpose of loops are, what the pros and cons are of each type.
start learning what a function is. how its used. what parameters are, recursive functions.
learn how to reuse code by using functions.
then classes, namespaces.
yes it may seem daunting, but really once you know what is in the garage, then start learning whats in each toolbox.
otherwise you're going to learn bad habits and take longer in the end....

mx_ond has been making weekly tutorials, email him and ask him for one. he just got certified and is almost always an email away.

try to start with a simple project.
it really depends what you want to do and where you wanna go with your career.
i mean, how many CDs out there knows flash so well?

Hello Sexy thats exactly what I want to do. I can do those onlie tuts but then all I have it that I never know how to customize anything unless the tut is dead on. Yeah maybe I should start with a different programming langauge? like PHP or something to learn the whole variable and If stuff?

And I dont really want to be a CD i want to know everything so i can start a real studio and be able to handle anything. Hello Sexy seems to have a good grasp of everything from the sites I see him produce ... so I wouldnt mind being that skilled.

...on a completely unrelated subject:
Hello Sexy - you did the design work for Composition? Brilliant! I just ordered some stuff from them. Didn't realize Denver was a hotbed for clean design.
Nice work, btw.

tip:
the most important word in code development is 'patterns'.
parent > extending parent > child

Undoubtedly, Colin Moocks Actionscript books. You need to buy Actionscript 1.0 book 1st. Don't think it could be done any better.

Hello-Sexy has some great work

if i had to start from scratch i would jump into the basics of c++ or java first. That way you will be more prepared for object oriented programming.

I've had several great opportunities pass me by because I couldn't code

Aren't those Definitive Guide books more like references for people who already know how to code?
