words of wisdom welcome.

If you like cold dark wet dreary places then I guess it's ok.

i loved it enough when i visited to plan on moving there before I got engaged/married. The one thing i was hesitant on was the job prospects. My best friend was there, going to school for design and he said you couldn't go anywhere without meeting 10 other people saying they were graphic designers and looking for jobs. I may not have the most prestigious job, but I like where I work and i *work.*

(Dec 21 05, 15:51)let me guess? Gollum's Cave?

oh yeah, that was the other thing. the weather finally did beat him down after two years and he said that it was very clique-ish (which i definitely saw). What I liked about it is that it reminded me of parts of San Francisco (my hometown) but was small enough to walk to a lot of places (like where i live now) and the cost of living was rather comparable to where I live now.

HAhahahaa my sister still gets pissed at me when I tell her that certain faces/scenes of Gollum remind me of her 7th grade school picture.

Nice place to visit. The other side of the Cascades is much better.

BTW if you're a local from Oahu coming to Portland be prepared for a culture shock. I originally moved from Maui. Meaning it's not much of a melting pot like the islands.

I looked for 2 years for a good print job 4 looking for a better one.

Thanks for all the information: I have been to Portland 3x in the past year, scouting and drinking copius ammounts of fermented hops. I love the lifestyle there but I can see that it is a bit ethically narrow. Though on everyone was beyond nice. In terms of job scene, I think Honolulu is in the same boat as Portland, finding a meaningful design job is like finding the chalice of the last supper in your own ass.

Though there are some fine agencies and design haus' there. I guess I would have to beat other deisgners with a stick to win a job.

Or maybe not. maybe your style is the fresh blood they are looking for. Try sending out some resumes and see what happens. If you're in the luxurious position of not having to move if you don't want to, then I wouldn't unless I was offered a job.

I would say moving is less about finding the awesome job for me but more about change/quality of life. I bet everyone would think Hawaii has a great quality of life...but its not that great in reality. Its extremely expensive.
Will send the resu to peeps, thanks for the input and thought.

I moved here thinking I'd rather wait tables than spend another day in Ohio. I just went back to Ohio and I'm positive I made the right choice. Now if I lived in Hawaii I might be thinking differently.

fullerc:
What prompted the move? Was it lack of opportunity? The City?

I had a better job in Ohio! Infact I have yet to make the kind of dough I was making back there. I moved for a change of scenery and life style and the mts and rivers and ocean but mostly because my girlfriend moved out here for grad school.

Cheers, good luck on that.

Hmmm...
I was thinking very seriously about moving to Portland from Tampa.
I had heard there was good opportunity out there.
Am I mistaken?
