Has anybody ever met or tried to contact one of their heroes? How did the exchange go? What were your intentions? What were the circumstances of your discussion? Were you confortable or did you fall into awkward "fan" mode?
I recently sent out two emails, one to Anton from BJM, who hasn't responded yet (surprise surprise, although I think they're in Europe at the moment), and another to JT Leroy, this brilliant writer who penned the collection The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things. I basically thanked him for writing such beautifully dark and honest stories, and for inspiring me to take my work to certain unthought of levels. I don't know what I expected him to say or what I really wanted from the exchange, but yesterday he wrote back - just to say thanks, and clearly he was hesitant to take the dialogue much further, which I don't really blame him for.
Anyway, just curious to hear of your experiences.

the only way to get anton to respond back is to disagree with one of his myspace bulliton rants

who is anton and what is BJM?
- kingjulien0
lol......danthon, that's probably true. i was just hoping to catch him during one of his more lucid moments.

not quite heros yet but i've contacted and appraoched people i've looked up to in a serious way with business ideas and propositions, went well and still are but they were honest when they were too busy or simply not capable...most will be, keep trying and be interesting

The lead singer of Brian Jonestown Massacre. He's brilliant but tends to go into messiah mode, which is rather amusing if you don't take it that seriously.

- Crouwel0

I hear stories about people running into Vincent Gallo at cornerside cafes in NY, looking all rugged and unapproachable.

more importantly, why the hell is Anton BJM one of your heroes?

i met bono in may. he was a cool down to earth dude. i thought i would act like a girl seeing a beatle, but i surprised myself in how chill i was.
i told him i was going to the concert the next night and asked him to play my favorite song. he said they probably wouldn't but he appreciated that i liked the song. he was hammered and reeked of cigarettes and it was only 1pm, so it was pretty cool to see a rock star in rock star mode. what was odd though, was he had his patented glasses down on his nose so when i shook his hand, i looked him in the eye. but when we made eye contact he just looked down in an awkward way. i found that kind of weird seeing as he meets-and-greets world leaders almost regularly.

oh man that anton...fucked
Friend, "Where'd that blood come from?"
Anton, "People's faces."

(Dec 20 05, 12:06)so what part of the world do you lead?
- Crouwel0
well i hardly ever approached people on purpose.
but i once walked into an elevator and bumped into Anton Corbijn and Bono.
most absurd meeting i ever had i guess..
- kingjulien0
Sorry mg33 I guess he's not on the official cool rock star top ten list.
Honestly, I admire the guy for
a. making beautiful music
b. maintaining his vision in a terrbily oppressive musical environment
c. for having the balls to tell anyone at anytime to fuck off.I saw a BJM concert in July with Gorbie that was one of the most electrifying, and spiritallu cathartic live events I've ever witnessed.

*ahem
I once met Superman. Well sorta'.
He flew right by me. Except on accident I felt some of his spit hit me in the eye as I looked up. I was crushed.
btw, from 600 ft up never get hit with spit in the eye. It feels like a brick.

so what part of the world do you lead?
