the dvd drive in my powerbook no longer accepts anything, discs just slide in and out but there is no pick up, worked fine yesterday... any experiences?
system profiler says its still there - maybe a motor?
damn annoying

did you open disk utility while a disc was in the drive to see if it could see it there.
I'm having similar problems with an Imac G4, and that's the only program that seems to acknowledge dvds/cds

yeah i tried that and it doesnt find the disk, but profiler finds the drive.

This happened with my new Imac G5, it was a problem with the Preferences, so i had to create another user on the system and then the drive worked fine. then just deleted the other user account and away i went....... that might help

really? let me try this

I've already tried resetting the power settings, resetting PRAM, repairing permissions and all that jazz, I'm pretty sure its hardware failure.
Whats the best way to fix this? Buy a new drive and do it myself? Anywhere good/cheap in London?
cheers
