this is a fairly obvious answer, but i would be interested in everyone's thoughts, or a study if anyone has one worth reading?
how does it affect your job satisfaction?

Sports Radio for me. Increases productivity and sleep.

Whenever I'm doing artwork, HAS to be either downtempo/drum and bass (neurofunk/dubby dnb) otherwise my productivity level is MUCH lower - get all my ideas and flow with something a lot better and a lot easier with dnb on in the background.

I listen to NPR until noon unless it's really boring.
Then it's usually a variety of things from my ipod. Sometimes even that gets boring.
For design stuff l kind of like something a little faster, Mogwai, Kid A, Mum, Mylo, LCD Soundsystem all come to mind.

when i want fresh ideas, i go out and buy new music. mostly ambient an a variety of electronica. it's usually hypnotic enough for me to design and forget i'm in a cubical, sitting infront of a computer like a praying mantis.

"when i want fresh ideas, i go out and buy new music."
People still do that? :jk:

I go through phases, usually when the lad opposite me puts on his house music I have to put my headphones on and listen to something.
I don't really feel affects my output or creativity either way though to be honest, it's just sometimes a nice distraction to be able to listen to something other than office rabble.

i listen to music 90% of the time - it greatly increases productivity. for new design work i like mellow stuff like zero7, lemonjelly or acid lounge stuff. for production/coding i prefer D&B, some trance, pulp...faster stuff.

I work best with instrumental music.
Free jazz and ambient makes me the most productive... sometimes I'll listen to noise music.

something like underworld, groove armada, FSOL...
helps my productivity. it just gets me going.
to get a fresh idea, i just stare at empty space like an old man in the park without any music on.

let me rephrase.
if you couldn't listen to music at work, would that affect your productivity?

I forgot Tortoise. Some of my favorite working music. TNT, and Millions Living Now Will Never Die.
The artwork on Millions is my favorite of any album.

I find listening to music helps wake me up in the morning. I have found however I am unable to listen to any Dip Set as I tend to knock everything off my desk whilst listening. So I'm more into Deerhoof, Björk, Fiery Furnaces and New Pornographers to keep it mellow.
If I wasn't able to listen to music at work, I imagine I'd go insane to the "white noise" they pump through our buildings, which of course is supposed to do the exact opposite.

at work i generally listen to the faster stuff, to help push me along.
at home when working on art or perrsonal projects its usually the slower musical landscapes.
I think it helps my productivity at work, plus I would go nuts if I didn't have my heaphones and have to sit in silence all day.

"let me rephrase.

Absolutely...I'd work at a much much slower pace and wouldn't be able to come out with anything nearly as good.

i'd go nuts if i cant listen to music at the office. having my desk in a junction where everybody at the office goes by me doesnt help at all.
music is my only escape from all the commotion.

Yea, when I was working over the summer my schedule consisted of (bear in mind I was a secretary/front desk guy doing advert work for them every once in a while): Coming in at 8am, plugging my headphones in and loading up XM for Opie and Anthony - 11am. Catch the 1st hour that I missed from 11am - noon. During which I'd get up and file papers or whatever during comercials every once in a while, and forum whoring for the rest of it (making myself look busy). Hour long lunch break from 12-1. Come back, turn on Radio1 for Fabio/Grooverider and The Basement, 1xtra for Flight, L Double, Bailey, and Friction. When I started bringing in my 80gb USB hd, I had all the music I could want. Then from 1-5, listened to music, answered phones, etc.
But more or less had music on alllllll day.

I would smash the fucking stereo if that was on for too long
