Level3 depeered Cogent early this morning. This can cause problems for single-homed networks on these providers.

Interesting justjeff.

Damn, I can't even access Cogent's own site for their statement...

Most of us in the networking community saw this coming a while back (everyone likes to pretend they have the balls to depeer cogent, though most don't ever get around to doing it for fear of backlash). FT depeered cogent a few months back, and AOL did it in 2002 or so.
It's a good day to be MCI, Sprint, or AT&T - I'm sure some sales engineers made some nice commissions on this nonsense. It's a bad day to be a cogent customer.

Jeff, sounds like Cogent is pretty fuckin shady:
"In other words, Cogent un/intentionally makes sure those they depeer are unreachable from the Cogent network, period. Since they've managed to gobble up such a large share of networks (PSInet, Aleron, Allied Riser, etc), they're able to leverage this tactic to ends one might consider shady: If you disagree with their practice of selling below market rate and don't want to give them access to your client base for free, they'll depeer you and disrupt communications to/from your own client base until you cry uncle."
This is an interesting issue I knew very little about before.

Cogent has always sold bandwidth for much lower than market rate (as low as $10 / Mbps , depending on where you are), which really screws some of the big providers. They get away with it by:
1) Peering as much as possible, rather than paying for transit
2) Losing money quarter after quarter. This is both damaging to the industry and dangerous, as they're essentially screwing the pricing model for EVERYONE while they kill themselves and damage their customers' collective reputations on each depeering blackout.
I'd like to see Cogent disappear or be bought out by one of the big guys, but I don't think it's going to happen in the next few years.
// yes, this should be new to you
// yes, I do this for a living.

Jeff, any suggestions besides bitch to Tech Services (I'm at a university) and see what happens? this is really annoying.
- justjeff0
Enter the confusion between resellers and real hosting - most 'hosting' companies these days don't ever touch the network - they lease boxes from EV1, slap a logo on a control panel, and pretend to know what they're doing. 'Real' hosting companies (those that actually own the boxes and manage the network) are fewer and far between.
Complaining to tech support isn't going to matter unless you're a Fortune 1000 company, they're not going to care about your complaint. You can find a new ISP, or you can wait for it to be resolved (should be within a few weeks).

Arrrrrrrrgggg them Pirates did it again

Jeff, like I said, I'm at a university, I have no choice over what ISP I use. I'm connected through their network.
I dunno, I'd wager 60,000 people affected at a single site complaining would cause some concern.
