nick;
i used a whole bunch of design styles & influences for the book. i tried to make each chapter have a different influence.
if design is anything, it is a cycle of trends. throughout the history of design, something comes along and people recycle it and incorporate it into past ideas until something new comes along.
i'm not claiming i'm better than any other designers and don't use trends like overlaying images or negative leading, but i do believe that using a trend or style without a specific conceptual reason for it is absolutely ridiculous. i think initially trends probably have a concept or meaning. however, once they become a trend, they're usually that way for no other reason than aesthetic.
that, i believe, is wrong.

why have each chapter look different from the next? not knowing what each chapter is about, i'd argue you're distracting the reader from your message, but also contracting yourself...
i thought maybe you were being ironic

me type english no good
- kingjulien0
what if the message has to do with the postmodern idea that everything is a collage of pre-existing styles, that everything comes from somewhere else (which isn't new btw)-- then doesn't the different chapter styles push forward that argument?
- nick0
yeah, maybe...
he said this though...
"how destructive trends are in both design, society, politics, and religion, and how it disrupts with culture and the progression of humankind?"
but then again i'm not exactly sure what he means by that either...
- nick0
also, the copy i was able to read from a couple of the previews doesn't communicate that thought either

Oh...
I feel like I've been locked up tight
For a century of lonely nights
Waiting for someone
To release meYou're licking your lips and blowing kisses my way
But that dont mean I'm gonna give it away
Baby, baby, baby
(baby, baby, baby)Oh whoa...
My body's saying let's go
Oh whoa...
But my heart is saying no (no)If you wanna be with me, baby
There's a price you pay
I'm a genie in a bottle
You gotta rub me the right way
If you wanna be with me
I can make your wish come true
You gotta make a big impression
I gotta like what you doI'm a genie in a bottle, baby
Gotta rub me the right way, honey
I'm a genie in a bottle, baby
Come, come, come and let me outThe music's playing and the lights' down low
One more dance and then we're good to go
Waiting for someone
Who needs meHormones racing at the speed of light
But that don't mean it's gonna be tonight
Baby, baby, baby
(baby, baby, baby)Oh whoa...
My body's saying let's go
Oh whoa...
But my heart is saying no (no)If you wanna be with me
Baby, there's a price you pay
I'm a genie in a bottle
You gotta rub me the right way
If you wanna be with me
I can make your wish come true
Come and set me free, baby
And i'll be with youI'm a genie in a bottle, baby
Gotta rub me the right way, honey
I'm a geine in a bottle, baby
Come, come, come and let me outOh whoa...
My body's sayin let's go
Oh whoa...
But my heart is saying no (no)If you wanna be with me, baby
There's a price you pay

If you wanna be with me

trends are generally indicators of society, I can't really see how they are harmful or disruptive. Usually the trend follows social behaviour, rather than dictate it...

today i am feeling: confused

------------------------------well, i make of that quote is, for example, say gangsterism in pop culture--how a thug persona is no longer about rebelling from conventional wisdom or rigid conformity but about perpetuating a style of dress and talk to fit it, be cool, and get laid.
if you think about it, that does interfere with our cultural evolution. also the violence that surrounds such a subculture does affect human kind.
then again, perhaps i should let prodigalsacker make his own case without me misinterpreting it.
either way, i enjoy the discussion.
- nick0
right, that makes complete sense.
i guess i just wanna know why he used different trends in a book trashing trends... just seems completely contradictory in my mind... unless he was being ironic and poking fun at it all... which doesnt seem to be the case.
- nick0
he disapeared :/
- kingjulien0
yeah, i think it's a valid question.
i read some of the writing on his site so that's why i know he's dealing with issues of re-appropriation, pastiche and originality.

"if you think about it, that does interfere with our cultural evolution. also the violence that surrounds such a subculture does affect human kind."
I think it actually generates cultural evolution. Newtons third law of motion: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
My point being, it takes the bad to get to the good, thus evolving.
I think humans in general need to be faced with extreme dire straits before they realize how harmful some things really are, ie - gang violence, environmental decline, George Bush...
- kingjulien0
good point mr_snuggles. some of the richest artistic periods have come as a result of really problematic cultural/socio-economic conditions.
and yet, there could be a point (hypothetically) where some catastrophic event prevents any further evolution or response to what's deemed bad. for example, a nuclear war.

yep, it's a scary reality. the whole east vs west scenario could very well end as such...
I guess overall this is how I look at trends within design:
They do truly mark a point in society. Look back through any design/art history book and you can tell what was going on at that time. When we look at design today, it is pretty scattered and really not even searching for any meaning or relevance, which completely reflects our society right now. We use visuals as vehicles to sell, products and ourselves. Graphic design is more of a commodity than a discipline.
Who am I kidding if I said I didn't utilize current design trends myself as a fallback. In branding it's always easy to market a brand by association, ie - If a consumer has thought that they've seen it before, they feel familiar and comfortable. And most likely accepted by their peers in the end. Also if I'm entering a competition, I'm not gonna design something completely devoid of what's hip, if I want to win the loot then i'd just be shooting myself in the foot...
So yes, I'm caught up in it as much as the next uninspired designer but it's all a part of this twisted game..
