So I was wondering if it was ok to charge a client for time spent doing things like uploading files, writing e-mails, phone calls, time spent burning discs, or driving for something related to the job, or stuff like that.
I'm just curious.

i charge for all above the above.. classified as "admin" or "correspondance" or "misc tasks" or whatever sounds good to me that day.

'handling charges'
yes - that's all fine to charge for - just make sure you're not gouging or padding and using ancillary shit as an excuse.
if it's exhorbant - I get pissed at vendors... it's kind of like McDonald's having the nerve to charge you almost two bucks for a 12 ounce coke that's half ice.
... bottom line... cover your charges... but show some love by not 'marking up' the little shit.. I don't think it's necessary unless you've got set rules and an insane accounting department that requires you rape to live. (that was over the top) :)

Of course you charge for that. I know that designers aren't the most savvy lot, but for vishnu's sake, think with your head.

Yes, you should charge. when you quote for a job, you should take into account the admin part of the job. it's just as important as the design part. and for driving somewhere related to the job, you can also write off the parking.

if you didn't charge for this portion of the job you'd be seriously losing out and asking yourself where did your free time go seeing as you only did X amount of hours on the job. Most of the time you'll be doing admin and it's a growth industry.

perhaps can only claim for phone bill and mileage.

Yes, you should charge. But don't tell him about that kind of charge. Just tell him that your design is expensive.
I think it's weird, to tell to someone.... “I will charge you for the e-mail that I wrote you 3 days ago.........”.

I call it Project Management myself. Or I just build it into the quote and don't mention it at all. Depends on how big the client is.
