I'd like to know which are the differences between a Web designer and a project manager. (I think i'm doing more PM than WD, and i'm being paid as a WD junior)

RANT attack?

If you have to be told what a PM does I doubt you will be able to command a PMs salary.
What type of work are you doing that you think qualifies as project management?

too many people are already way overpaid these days.

(Sep 13 05, 12:14)I can't wait until I am one of them.
Alas, I have to.

A project manager overseas projects and acts as an intermediary between clients and designers/programmers/etc. They usually take over a project after it has been accepted.
They are the go-between and usually have no defining talents of their own, other than their ability to placate.

No, is NOT a rant attack, i really don't know (so i asked)
Btw my work is going in this way: I do the project (concept + interactive design and drafts of the interface and of the pages). I meet with the programmers to decide what tech use, how structure the DB and all the computer stuff.
Then write down a document with all these elements. ( The project document)
I give this doc to the Art Director which does the graphic
Then i collect all the stuff (images, texts audio video) needed for the project., organize it and if something is missing i write a brief if is a text (that will be sent to a copywriter) or talk with the sales accountant, to talk with the client about it.
Then i have to monitor the production of the website, do the flash stuff, and some HTML.
And for every action/communication send a mail to the boss. What job is this?

thats like being a garbage man and being paid to be a receptionist.

if you're working at a small firm, then this type of thing is typical. if you're working at a medium to large place then you are getting screwed.
- seed0
Are there other web designers above you? Is your title Jr Web Designer? Who handles most of the client communication?
- canuck0
If you're a project manager then chances are you are not a designer. OF course if you are freelance or in a really really small shop then I guess you could be wearing more hats.
Project manager usually deals with the client, makes sure everything is on task, makes sure design and development are functioning. etc. etc. Creates a lot of documents. PMs should know the ins and outs of design and development as well. It's more business organization timeline shit. Not sure about in other countires, but in canada most Project Mangers (the good ones) are certified. Project management institute or something. Anyway if you were to become one it would be something to look into.
But if you're a good PM you're going to make some decent coin. Lot of stress though.

Uber, i work for a small studio. I'm the only webdesigner there and i started working 9 months ago (that's why i'm Jr)
Above me, there is the PM who handles the client communication (but just for materials and delivery)
and i often talk with the accountant guy who keeps the relations with the client about the project.

your either:
a highly talented PM + an Information Archtect + a bit of a flash production guru
or
your a low paid, low level designer cutting his teeth on a variety of work that will eventually pay off big time at your next job.
IMO, once you've mastered your position, don't stay there too long, they will keep you underpaid and under appreciated if you let them...

you don't have the job title i aspire.

It is really common for a web designer to take on many roles.
If you only did design concepts and production would you have enough work to fill 40 hours every week?
- Fariska0
Maybe not 40, but 30-35 surely.
But probablly it's just these weeks that we are very hurried for a couple of things.
Thanks all

Sounds like a mix of junior designer and web producer.
- jevad0

sounds like you're an Information Architect + designer.
but again, i'm a designer and i've done most of the stuff you're talkinga about. I'm a lead/senior designer though.
