I bought a 20" iMac, but sinse i've benn a dad (for 10 weeks), i've been travelling back and forth to work and home and transporting the iMac. Which is bound to end in tears when it hits something hard.
ANyway, i'm thinking about exchanging it (somehow) for a 17"laptop to have as my main machine to design on.
My question is, do any of you use a laptop as your main machine? and do you enjoy using it as opposed to a monitor, machine and seperate keyboard.
Cheers (sorry that was a bit long winded).

my 15inch powerbook is my main machine...although for intense motion work i use the G5 at work...i have keys to the place and its juqt around the block.
the powerbook is good for making graphics, animating them then i just plug the external hard disk to the G5 and let that big boy do the rendering.
but the plus about powerbook i can worl anywhere and thats cool.buy it...or take your kid to work ;)

If you are going to move around so much, get the 15, the 17 is too big, heavy and eats a lot more battery, I would reccomend it if you are going to work on one place.
You can plug your laptop to a monitor at work and have dual screen if you really need the spacehope that helps!

i have a 17" pb. it's wonderful. when i am in the office i have a flat screen hoooked up and bluetooth keyboard and tablet....basically the laptop turns into a tower, but then just plug the monitor (all USB stuff and external drive are connected through the monitor) and you are mobile. the one down side is that the 17" drains batteries at an amazing rate.

how long does the battery last?

A PB is really great when you HAVE to travel. But nothing
beats plugging in a Big Color
Calibrated Monitor and Keyboard
when it gets down to those 12 hour days.

I have a 15 but a rarely use it at all for work. I bought it with that intention but to me, I need to concentrate when I work. At the park, I rather look at girls and watch the freaks, on the subway it's too freakin' noisey- in the car on trips the other(s) in the car are talking too much to think, ...etc. Plus- I used it as a desktop machine for a while but it is slower than my real desktop machine so I found no benefit in using at the home office either.
Basically, I watch movies on it, surf a bit, and listen to music. It ended up being a glorified toy.
I work when I'm at work (home mostly) in the office- planned and situated- when I am moble I got better things to do..

I need to work all over the place, so I have a 15" Powerbook, and large displays and keyboard both at work and at home to plug it into... plus several batteries for those lnng flights...
I don't think I'll ever go back to a tower..its just not worth all the hassle trying to keep everything in synch between laptop and tower, even if it is a touch slower than equivalent tower

15" PB, do it!

agreed...I was on the fence VS a tower as well, but bought a PB on the chance I could be more productive since I too was a new dad.
I can work anywhere at all...get a PB!

I have the 15" pb as my main computer, bring it work to surf on the side like Newstoday and ichat.
I think a 17" would be okay to carry around if you have a backpack using both shoulders, but it would be a drag to carry around in a messenger bag unless you're strong.
Plug it in to an extra monitor when you get home, and you're good to go.

Congrats on the new baby... In honor of my son Josh being born on May 20, I thought he needed a new PowerBook for his crib, so I got him a 15"er. He doesn't get to use it too much since I hog it all the time, but it rocks. I no longer am strapped to the home office, I can work anywhere in the house I want (or park etc.) and he's always with me. I've got both my babies on my lap and I'm like a pig in shit.
