Password Protection Q

A client of mine would like to deploy a password protected page for each of its clients. Their clients would log in using a unique username/password combo and be routed to their own personalized client access page, yada yada.
I know this can be server side (htaccess) or done with CGI on a secure server, but I don't really know more than that.
Any opinions on this technology decision would be really, really helpful...

i just finished a similar setup in asp.net/vb but you can do it in regular asp, php, cold fusion.
i'd recommend first picking the language you are most comfortable in.

I built almost the same thing last year in ASP and it's very easy to do. Don't even need a DB.
