Centrino - my 1.3ghz centrino PM is faster than my work 2gig PIV.. lso centrino uses less battery, so generally you'll last longer unplugged. Wireless built-in is a very good thing too. Pay the extra $.

Toshiba. No contest.

neither... get a MAC :)

toshiba, they have good, bright displays. centrino is really good too.

before I saw the options I thought Toshiba, I got one to replace my Dell (which had persistant keyboard problems) and don't regret it

I'll get a Toshiba or something better in the future. I have a crappyish laptop now, but it's alright for now. I just need some moolah first.

The mobile P4's are worthless in a laptop. They eat the batter so fast.

My laptop batteries hardly last any time...it's a good thing I only use the system at home.

Make sure you really, really, really need a laptop....otherwise get a desktop. Mine sites on my god damn desk all day...not on my lap.

I've had 4 Powerbooks...now looking for a good Windows laptop to run Alias Autostudio (3D modelling, not available on OSX)... but really surprised at the lack of nicely designed powerful Windows laptops... VAIO's arent really that high-end, HP/Toshiba/Dell are just ugly and depressingly bad overall product design, and most of the smaller brands that do high-spec are really really ugly and brick-like... what should I get? (£1500-2000ish)
don't need a big screen, as it will be attached to a large screen most of the time...prob 15"
or should I get a tower/workstation? Is there much advantage over a laptop for 3D work? which brand? (I dont want to build anything)

people who think computers can be "ugly" confuse the shit out of me
"I would've gotten more done but I just got sick having to look at it so long"
wtf is that?
- Jaline0
Are they actually irked by the ugliness or are their eyes getting tired and are developing a headache from staring at the screen for too long? I thought I could use a computer 24h once and I discovered that I couldn't without leaving for at least 30min. I think I know what you mean though. If it's just because it's 'ugly', I don't get it either.
- ribit0
there's no reason why we should have to put up with ugly products, ugly graphics, ugly homes, ugly anything... isn't this a design forum? Where are your standars, your ideals??
*starts to cry

Ribit, I used to buy the pretty Vaios (And if you get on ebay, there are some good looking Work-horse models, the kind that just sat on your desk and you moved only when necessary. The PCG series in the 3ghz range with MASSIVE Screens).
But I care more about solid performance and a good build quality. And power+pretty aside, the Vaios were fragile and not suited to being moved about.
Plus they ate batteries like a motherfucker.
So if you want something you'll be careful with and shit, look at the Sony Workhorse models.
If you want something that will run decent, won't crash, won't break, isn't too expensive, is light, has great battery life...look at IBM (love that classic black) and Toshiba.
And if you really need pretty, try http://usa.asus.com/products/not…

Asus have some nice models... the ATI Mobility™ Radeon™ X600 64MB graphics... Is this good for 3D modeling? (anyone know what's adequate graphics for running Alias Autostudio? Alias do have a 'qualified systems' list on their site, but it is a bit pessimistic I think)
