What is the best and cheapest way of having say - my files on my laptop at home and be able to access them here at work?

you said it, remote desktop (built into windows xp and windows 2000).
alternatively, get broadband with a static ip address, set up a web server on your home machine, and acess it through that.

You can get the Microsoft Remote Desktop client for Mac to run a remote Windows session, or just use FTP to your home IP address, or AFP (Mac)

before i paid for a static ip address, i would turn my home pc on before work, get the ip, and email it to work. that way you don't necessarily need a static one, it's just that if the connection goes down, you're done for.

I've been using this app for over a year, and I couldnt live without it. It's pretty cheap too.

I got a trick around that one...
Set up a task on your home pc to open up a site you have hosted remotely. Have that site log the IP and close the browser. then you always have the most current ip, even is your connection goes down. I have had this running for over a year now, and it has not failed me yet...

You can also use a free dynamic DNS service to keep a domain name pointed to your home IP as it changes
