Need to get some flyers die cut into the shape of a phone for work. Can anyone give me some advice or links please as I have never done this before. Do I need to supply the printers with a vector outline and leave bleeds as usual?
- BonSeff0
yeah, give the printer an eps of the outline of the phone. you can place the ooutline in your artwork to set up the bleeds, just assign a registration color to it and make sure the printer knows its just there for placement

DONT DO IT!

why do I have to assign a registration colour? What if I decide to do it in PS as a path? Can I just name the layer as CUT OUTLINE for eg?
- Soler0
no, don't do a path in PS.
Do a vector outline in Illy or quark, like BonSeff said, and then assign it reg or 100% magenta- and call it out on the pdf or hard copy for the printer as a dieline.

thanx. Any reason for doing it in Illy?
- Soler0
Yes, it is not customary to provide layered art to a vendor. It leaves room for error.
Any PS work should be flattened as a tiff or eps, placed in Illy or Quark, then a dieline placed over it. That way the vendor can isolate the exact die line and place it, move it, thicken it, whatever they want to do as they wish, easily.

the idea is that you DONT do it in one of the CMYK, or any spots you may be using.. you choose an additional colour so that the printer can just run seps of that colour seperately for the die.

true, i usually give mine a hot pink outline, so the prepress is sure to question it
