For some reason illustrator CS wants to piss me off like hell tonight...
it's not letting me apply a gradient to any text...
any ideas? i'm sure its probably something simple

perhaps the app is trying to tell you somting... :)
anyway, go to the appearence pal. and add a new fill, make sure it's above the characters and apply gradient to it.

Tried outlining the type first?

outlining it worked -
is that the only way to fill type with a gradient? is to create the outline?

there are many ways to apply gradients to text objects while keeping them editable.
two easiest methods are probably applying a pattern to the text (gradient in the pattern in that case) or the path>outline stroke effect

As I mentioned before:
In the appearence palette>new fill> apply gradient.
just make sure the fill is above the characters. it'll stay editable. if you want, I can e-mail you a file.

yeh that's probably best you can even put that to a style but that doesn't give the option of per letter gradient
if you want really ugly looking type
