So I applied for this job recently and they said both Indesign and Quark experience was neccessary. (by the way im kinda just finishing up my studies and Quark was not covered in much depth as they said it will not be used much at all in the near future). But serioously do many of you guys still use Quark, im wondering if I should try and learn it better. I hate it though, its so clunky and Indesign kicks ass... Would be good to know how many of you out there are still using it and your thoughts on if you think it will survive...

fuck quark... ok, too harsh, but InDesign has grown so much, i personaly think that it has passed it. I give it 5 more years and then I think its going to die... Adobe = lots of $$ = lots of R&D = Amazing products... I wouldnt be supprised if Adobe buys Quark in a few years...

I hate to say it, but I still use Quark at work. I'm art director for a weekly newspaper so Quark does what we need it to do. We've been using it since before I got there (over 2 years ago), but we do have InDesign, and myself and the other artist are trying to learn it more.
I'm doing my own magazine project at home and I'm definitely using InDesign for that.
Quark does the trick, it just doesn't do tricks.

I also still use Xpress, and i hate it. A lot of people still use it cause it's been around for so long.
Indesign is much easier to use.

if you don't really know it backwards and forwards like indesign, you'll pick it up quick. it'll just be a little frustrating getting used to shortcuts and the few things that you can't do as easily.
if you can get to a copy on campus or whatever, just play around in it. most of the fundamental functions are the same, just different names.

InDesign here...
Better integration between pshop/illy, better at generating PDFs.
Future looks brighter with Adobe, now they've 'aquired' Macromedia, cs3 will hopefully incorporate a new evolution of flash, one which gets rid of writing gay action script.
Oh, and as always, the price, Quark is way too expensive.
And who's idea was that, not being able to back-save to 5 & 4 - commercial suicide?

Ive used quark at a summer job a while ago, after that summer job I didnt use it for 1,5 year. Then I needed to design a book. Opened Quark and then closed it. I got lost in the interface.
So I opened Indesign.....and it worked

i started with quark and i think it's probably the oldskooler in me that prefers it (like favouring tags over stencil graf, see?). there's something zen about quark and, up until a few months ago, you could still assume that it was the industry standard. that said, quark has been doing its level best to alienate absolutely everyone, so the switch is on. roll on indesign.
