Have applied for a job I'd really like with the library council in Dublin. They're asking for a reference from my current employer however. How do I go about asking my boss for one without pissing him off? If I fail in getting the job I'm afraid that he'll be pissed off with me and I'll get sinister looks and frowns and wierdness all round. Yikes!

Is there anyone else there you can ask?

have them call a coworker or a friend that will pretend to be your boss..
have them give you a glowing reference and say how they dont want to let you go etc..
- brandelec0
why would your boss be pissed off? can't you talk to him about it first?
- blaw0
kind of a prick request. i mean, it doesn't take a genius to realize that would make for an uncomfortable situation, whether or not you got the new position.

I think it's unusual and idiotic of them asking for reference of your current employer and it's pissing me off.

you could refer HR (if you have one).

That answers my question then-wierdness all round it is then...
..ant that's only the NTers. ;)

nooooo..
the other guy had it right..
have a mate at the company do it..
never ask your boss if its weird..
there must be someone their that has your back..
(ask them first) and then give THEIR number as a ref..
best way to avoid teh weirdness

I could ask a few people to cover my ass but I'm pretty sure they'd fuck it up. I work with a bunch of messers. Anyway the library council is a government body so they're pretty thorough in their checks.
I can't get promoted any further in my job so I think he'd understand me taking the opportunity to expand my horizons etc
I'm fully aware that wierdness will abound but was hoping that someone might have some experience of doing it or any other good advice.
Either way I'll be clearing out my desk

ill do it
- saroose0
if they ask ethios I'm a keen badminton player and like taking walks in the park whilst listening to my vast Chris de Burgh rekkid collection. ;)
- ethios0
gotcha, ill be expecting a call
- uberdesigner0
tell him that he's a horse-faced wimp in a long email.

who asks for a reference from your *current* employer? that's almost impossible.
- skelly0
that's like asking your girlfriend to convince another girl to go on a date with you.
- MrDinky0
call me and i will give you a good reference
"yes she was a very good worker at my sex shop BUT the kicker is that she also worked as a peepshow jockey. we would miss her dedication and work ethics."

"If I fail in getting the job I'm afraid that he'll be pissed off with me and I'll get sinister looks and frowns and wierdness all round. Yikes!"
I DON'T GET IT???????????????????
- Crouwel0
your boss will be pissed if you can NOT get the job? so that must only motivate him to write a stunning reference if he wants to get rid of you so much???
- Crouwel0
oh.. i think i did not understand you..
nevermind.. i am so dumb.

I asked my boss today to be a referee and he was totally cool. I was totally surprised by how nice and sound he was.
He said he understood why I might want to move on and didn't take it as an insult to him or the company. He also said he appreciated my honesty.
Pheeewww!
Just goes to show you can never really know someone unless...em...and all that jazz...etc
