also lol @
a.) "grow up and get with the times" and "his ideas about design are retarded" being a sensible crit.
b.) you thinking that graphic design is merely a scene, for rockstars to impact. some of us do this for a living, son.
c.) you actually bringing up that i misspelled your name, thus driving my point home perfectly. (you certainly won't see me misspell 'david carson')

my friend went to a car-five-on book signing years ago. he was really into his work.
he asked car-five-on how he got involved with that surfer magazine back in the day.
car-five-on said "because i'm good".
that was around '99 and his career ended two days later.

funny. although the fact that hillman curtis just made a mini-doc about him may negate your point that his career ended 2 days later.

To: jpolk & friends;
Are you car5on's www.guard or something?
Or maybe a psychic since you calmly make a prediction about another's life outcome...Seriously, take a look at yourself. You're acting foolishly disrespecting another fellow designer, far beyond the level that was used by nspace to describe davey c5.
Oh and for the record, davey c5 is shit.. complete shit.. literally..
Don't be haten, start participatin'... bitch ...

Why the personal attacks on me or some letters from my sketchbooks, this thread is about Carson, sorry if my first comment came off rude, but attacks like that are just as immature as my first comment, so we are even.
As for getting with the time, I dont mean start creating all the trendy shit thats out there like hand drawn stuff, etc,, I just feel like that whole thing hes pushing with the personal expression or doing whatever you want is getting a bit old, and in my opinion not the most effective way to design.
If I was doing an identity say, I dont think there is any need to start trying to express myself through the work, I think it should express the entity that its for; as for any design I think it should be about the content rather then putting the focus on personal style or expression.
Thats just my take on it, like I said I respect the impact he has made on the scene.

jpolk,
why are you hating on an opinion... and bringing up somebody's splash page and how the letters are drawn is pretty weak when yours has nothing to show.
- opiate0
that comes across better NS, i feel ya.

jpolk sounds bitter. he must not be very talented.

last time i checked, 45 degree lines were sooo 1999. but i will say you added a spin by making them move!!!

"so there was neville brody... and then I came along.... (moves hands aside to show theres nothing there) .... im not saying its not possible, but i just didnt thought there would be that big of a gap, you know?"

(Jul 6 05, 12:51)my point is that if you're having a book signing and there aren't crowds of people around the corner and a student designer asks you a question about your career - don't give a dick answer - take two minutes to answer the question.
i think that rockstar mentality fucked him up. the tsunami relief posters on his site remind me of sagmeister tripping over himself to get exposure after 9-11.
- opiate0
that was an oscar moment. HAHAH,
"so there was neville brody... and then I came along.... (moves hands aside to show theres nothing there) .... im not saying its not possible, but i just didnt thought there would be that big of a gap, you know?"

(Jul 6 05, 13:12)by that i mean, he just ported his surf aesthetic to some wave photographs and did a predictable car-five-on type treatment and phoned the fucker in.
