i notice that a lot of companies when posting jobs say "No Agencies". especially in the UK. Does this make it a bad idea to go with an agency to find work in a good design firm?

My guess is they don't want to deal with the headache of a recruiter, but here in the U.S. the agency's have connections to some of the top Ad agency's. I think recruiters can be good if you have the time to make the extra interviews.

(Jun 30 05, 21:07)sorry yeh i know that, just wondering if design companies dont like using recruitment agencies because they think its a hassle or expensive or because they think people assigned by recruitment agencies arent good designers etc.
or for some other reasons.
the reason im curious is because im moving back to London soon and i got a job through a recruitment agency last time. But this time i want a job with a good company or ad agency and im not sure if i should go through them again?
i also wonder whether some recruitment agencies in london have a bad rep etc...

That's another good point, the employers might not want to pay thousands to the recruiter.

It's the 20% of first year salary payable to the recruitment agency that's the killer.
I also find that the designers that have to offer aren't that great. I'd rather pay for ads to attract candidates and then take it from there. Oh, and recruiters can be a pain in the ass!

I've never underatood the reasons for recruitment agencies. Surely it would work out cheaper for the company to advertise, and its hassle free. I've haven't used an agency and I never intend to. I use the old fashioned method and just contact the company myself.

People who work through agencies generally can't hold down a job, well some of the useless c*nts we get I reckon can't.

It's the fact you essentially end up paying some bullshitter from a recruitment agency a fortune for sending you a list of unsuitable candidates they want rid of.
Some agencies are more reputable than others but as was mentioned, just scan the sites of firms in your local area if you're looking for work.

They provide shit candidates, for design anyway, as for the most part they can't tell good from bad.
They cost loads.
They hassle you forever once they have your mobile number, even after you have a job.

if you are moving back, why don't you just contact the agencies you are interrested in directly? send them your stuff.
i woud only rely on the agencies to get a job if i really need some money, you might still find a good place but it's always nicer without the third guy

sorry, i meant studios and ad agencies, not recruitment agencies

Alot of agencies do use recruitment companies mainly the big ones it's just you are only seeing ads in the sports section and that's the only other way of getting a position filled.
I have never used a recruitment company, a bit to shark like for me – money, money, money. I prefer to seek out companies that I am suited to and target them.

yeh i think when i get back there i'll go to the agencies again just for temporary freelance work until i can find myself a good fulltime job somewhere i really want to work.
It seems as though a lot of big reputable places in london use recruitment places just because they dont have the time to interview and sift through cv's and folios. But i guess thats the kind of places that dont really need a 'good' designer in a lot of cases. Its mostly for artworkers but they do seem to get a lot of design positions.

If the company is any good then they make time to sift through cv's and folios...

hey agentfour
that was quick! didn't you just go back to perth recently? how is it there anyways? much work around?
i think it's always better to go for jobs directly rather than through recruitment agencies. even better, don't even wait for jobs to be advertised, do your research and approach the design agencies you'd like to work for BEFORE they advertise.
Something like 75% of jobs never get advertised, and everyone is going for the 25% of jobs that do, so it does pay to approach companies even if nothing has been advertised. Also it shows initiative and that you really want to work for that particular company as you will have singled them out.

with us we've been stung by shite picks from agencies in the past, so whenever they call we usualy do a speaker-phone based piss take and hang up.
Whatever works for you though you know...
