Which is better to save in?
I've always saved my files as .eps out of Illy because it seems like a pretty end-all-be-all format. Any one can open it and almost any app can import it. Where as, i've found that .ai files can be kind of touchy in ways i just don't get.
There's a girl at work that gets mad at me when i do this because she says that .eps files are "bad"... i haven't figured out how exactly they're bad, but according her they are.
So if any one can settle this with learned reason, i would be a happy camper.
Thanks

AI is native completely to Adobe Illustrator where as EPS is more of a generalized format used by many applications.

when working in Illustrator i save as .ai as native formats process quicker (or so i seem to believe).
when i'm finished i create the .eps.
i never knew .eps was bad.

i always send out EPS files to publications, etc.
tell her that gruntt said "shut the hell up"

there are probably versioning issues. aer you guys running the same version of Illy?

save both formats but send out eps

blaw, See i've never noticed a speed difference, and since i usually end up importing into Quark, i always figured why waste time saving twice.
Jax, Nope, same version.. in facte she likes Freehand, so one would think that .eps would be better if she needed to use art from one to the other..
- JazX0
well there you go, she liking Macromedia Freehand, which I'm not even sure is being supported since Adobe bought Macromedia. You can get strange quirks trying to send .eps's back and forth from Illy to Freehand. At least I've seen it happen. Does Freehand open .ai files?
- scoops0
No, it hates on them like i hate on freehand...
- gruntt0
send her RTF files, she'll beg you for an eps.

yup

freehand...
for what? actual work?

I know... Not my choice. The app work flow here is kind of backwards.
- versa0
many times .ai s end up smaller in size as well
- version30
ai crushes eps imo and more times than not when something needs and eps an ai will do just fine and yes ai are usually smaller than eps by a significant amount
but if you really want to hurt someones feelings, send them a wmf. it retains vector information
- scoops0
Really versa? I never noticed.
To be honest, it's not that i have a super problem with .ai, it's just that the girls insistance on an almost superstitious hate of .eps that gets me. I mean i've been doing print work for about 5 years now, and i've never had a searious problem using .eps as my primary file format. for the way i use it it seems just as editable as an .ai, but without having to re-save when i got to output...
So to further define the question... am I just straight up wrong?
- Soler0
I only use eps. Unless I'm saving a text versus an outlined version, then the text version is an .ai.

Anyone using Freehand probably shouldn't be telling other people how to conduct business.
