My girl has a japanese computer and the keyboard has a japanese character option and other keys on it, I would imagin eyou'd have to have the same for chinese...

thetick... don't need... chinese uses Hanyu Pinyin, which is like phonetics expressed in english letters which a normal keyboard is capable of.

oh cool! Did not know that..I love the knowledge dump on NT !

You type pinyin - without any tonation accents - and then select the corresponding character. Because of tonality and word asociations, and one word can give multiple characters, you need to know your character beforehand.
What I am saying is that you will not type the exact character, rather you get all the possible characters for what you type, and you need to select the one that is correct.
Then, if you have chinese fonts (either traditional or simplified chinese) you can change style accordingly.

I can write in Thai in text editors but for photoshop or illustator you have to buy a special usb plug thing. I dunno about Chinese though. ????

which brings me back to my original question.. what software gives you the character options from the pinyin you type? is it a seperate ap? or can windows give you that option in illustrator... or do i need a chinese illustrator?

Hows about the language key usb thing? They got to have it at the black market tech mall.

I use US-Illustrator software, but my OS can be set to chinese (traditional or simplified). If in that language set, I can select a CN font, and just type the pinyin anywhere I want to. I automatically get a popup bar with all characters.
wat I meant is that you need to know chinese characters, not just pinyin.
In photoshop or InDesign: same medicine. Switch language setting, pop a cn typeface, and type

sweet.. cheers SirLawrence, learning the characters at the moment.. there's only 3,000 basic ones...
