I've searched all over the place for a way to simply pass a variable from html/javascript to a Flash movie to tell it to go to a frame. Does anyone have anything?
The following is horribly documented and is probably beyond me, even though it's not that many steps.

Thanks in advance.

I always do that, but you're right. I haven't heard from Unfit in a while.
Everyone else is talking about church.

Forget it. I'm convinced that you cannot pass a variable from a web page to Flash no matter what anyone says.

of course you can. you can do anything with some server-side scripting. for example: write the variable to an external file that the movie includes..

it can be done by setting flash properties, but i wouldn't recommend it as several mac browsers don't support it and no versions of firefox support it yet.

You can use JS to do a "doc.write" that creates the object / embed tags with a "flashVars" parameter that flash will then be able to read.
Then all you need is a function to look for "flashVars" and behave accordingly.

Thanks, Gunforhire. I was all over that first entry, it totally bombs. I'll check the other ones, but I remain totally skeptical.

Explain exactly what it is your tryinig to accomplish, there may be a simpler way.

Thanks for all the help and links. Here is the tutorial that finally explained that all variables sent by FLashVars enter the Flash movie as STRINGS!!
