Hello everyone,
I am a student studying graphic design but my course doesnt cover any 3D software. So I was going to try and learn some of it myself (I wanna do some nice 3D logos). I was wondering if anyone could recommend which one is best - Maya, 3D Studio Max, Lighwave 3D or any others which may be better. Or do you need all of these? Thanks guys and girls for your help :)

better for "3D logos" ?
i think you will be better off with a 3d plugin for Illustrator

swift 3D is the best for that kinda stuff.

yeah, swift-3d would be the best for just logo design and the cost isaffordable to.

but then for that kind of stuff 3D Studio is the fastest way to start with of the 3d softwares

if you are still in school and try to learn, go all the way. Maya.

Cinema 4D is a very intuitive tool for 3D, very good for basics but can also get very advanced if need be. I use Maya, it has paint effects and an incredible particle system but the learning curve is quite steep. The great thing about Maya though is that there is a huge amount of resources out there in the community. C4D does not have as many resources yet.

ive been checking out Blender lately, and while i had nothign but contempt for the program in the past, im discovering that it's in fact an incredibly powerful piece of software. and with the just released version, it seems to be gaining up on the big players like Maya and MAX. At $0, seems like a good deal :)

I'm not focused on 3d but I use it for limited animation and illustration and in flash. I use Carrara Studio. I was able to convince the boss to buy the $580 initial program.
At any rate, if you aren't into movie making, I'd pass on the other programs. Carrara is easy, intuitive and has a nice interface. I've had it for 3 yrs and still haven't reached my boundaries with it.

i use MAX. learned it in school and really like it for modelling.
i hate it for animation... scratch that. i hate it for animating rotation. the rotation controllers are different than the positional ones, never made sense to me and maybe never will. is maya better for that? have never used....

I'm a Maya fan. Cinema4d and Lightwave, the interface sucked too much to really be able to get in them. Lightwave especially.
If I can offer you any advice, pick an app and buy one of those thick ass books on the software. You'll need it. 3d apps are the deepest apps out there.

oh, and toastie, I love blender. I'm pretty good at it, I'm even on the official Blender gallery for a piece of abstract 3d I did a couple years back:

(Evan Tatro)If you got any questions or anything, feel free to E-mail me. I've done about everything with that app, even simple stuff with the game engine.

I enjoy using Cinema 4D, but of course MAYA is the one, but I still believe Cinema4D is enough.

Thing is you need to think about what kind of things you'll be doing.
Maya's great for nerds who like to script, making complex characters and fuck off things like Gollum.
Max is better for artists who just want to get into modelling, texturing and lighting.
Both have mental ray now, but Vray for Max is the easiest way to get great images like this -

I like maya a lot more. You need to build stuff from the ground up, it feels more transperant.

For poly-modelling : SILO is a little revolution (reminds me of Nendo back in the days) ... get a demo on http://www.nevercenter.com
There is Rhino3D for nurbs which is quite intuitive : http://www.rhino3d.com
